Are you playing under emulation or on a real Amiga? If it is emulation, please post your config to this thread.

It may sound silly, but...
Are you sure your left mouse button is working well? This was a problem with the Amiga mouses I had, the left button would wear out or something and then I would need to SMASH the button to work properly. |

When I finally got an Amiga the mouse I got was one of those optical ones which needed a rasterised mousemat. Tough for me that the mat supplied was horrible. The 2nd one I got with a standard mouse but with a bit worn down left mouse button.
It was practically impossible to play cannon fodder with that mouse. |

I don't remember playing the game very well, but maybe it is either the party split function or some look around the map thing...

If the problem is to regain control of your soldiers after splitting...
in the upper-left section of the screen, where it's shown the name of the soldiers, you will see the names are split in groups, and above each group there's a wild animal (A eagle, a wolf and a snake for each group, if I remember correctly). You just have to click in the animal for that group to control it. To make a group join other group, just click in a soldier of the group you want to join, and the group you are controlling will join it. Bah, I just took the effort and took a screenshot to make it easier. Click in the area within the purple circle to take control of that group. I should go back to this game... I totally love it, and I have never finished it. I just realized I have a savegame in the last stage of Mission 9, still with Stoo (the 3rd soldier) alive, and only 6 deaths in my army. |

@Shatterhand
Geez, thats impressive, talk about being the ultimate sniper! You ought to have led the troops in the movie Predator-Big Arnie could manage only himself & some poor damsel in distress to survive! That would've made a great "easter egg" style bonus level IMO, a great game nonetheless! |

Oh, but this was done in a R-Type way. Every time I lost a soldier, I would go BACK to the start of the mission and do it all over again. I just LEARNED where the soldiers were, I completery mastered the levels. Those 6 deaths happened when I got to a point to say "FUCK, I GIVE UP", something that's not too hard to happen in Cannon Fodder
It's funny, because the soldiers have a name, I do feel somewhat attached to them, like playing RPGs. I hate when a soldier who's with my group for a long time dies. |

Very well spoken Shatterhand, all too true! I thought the "Boot Hill graveyard" aspect was great, insofar as it generated a real "loss" to lose one of your higher ranked "names" whom you'd built from a rookie.
Its weird but I agree about how you built an "attachment" to them-Although we might disagree its the same factor why I really enjoyed FFVII for the same reason with all of its unique characters,(Losing Aeris & then finding the story didn't lend to ressurecting her, as you'd might've expected.), & Suikoden too for that matter. Going off-topic, I realise, but be it an RPG or indeed Cannon Fodder itself, I honestly think it makes for a better game not merely trying to roll up the best set of stats for a nameless "clone" character, but rather learning to adapt & learn about with your pre-named "group". Okay, if you don't click with the main character(s) its a bad thing,(& ultimately you won't like the game), but if you identify with your character(s) you're more determined not to lose them. To go back on-topic, I think that unspoken aspect of Cannon Fodder shined through superbly. |

Identifying with your characters is always a good thing. I never got too far in Cannon fodder, mostly because I was determined to not lose the first people before they had reached some silly high rank. The higher rank, the higher skill and precision when shooting too I think.

For me the best example of this was in Metal Gear Solid. If you have good characters in the middle of a good storyline, there's no way you won't feel attached to them.
When I finished Metal Gear Solid, I felt like my life was a little more empty. (There were really a small number of games that made me feel like that. It's like a friend who spend lots of great time with, is now going away, and won't be coming back) I can understand how you felt wih Final Fantasy. My problem with it is not in the storyline, it's in the gameplay. |

I felt a bit empty in the end of Another world after seeing the main character die, or at least get mortally wounded.

Getting back to Cannon Fodder... I read in The One (I think it was the Cannon Fodder II WIP) Jon Hare saying how the british army (or something like that) felt offended with Cannon Fodder, because they were disrespecting the people who died in war. He said it was supposed to be the other way: in games like Smash TV and Total Carnage, zillions of people die and no one cares about it. In Cannon Fodder, they wanted to make it more human.

And they even included the note that the game was in no way endorsed by the royal british army.

Hey that not endorsed by the british army was just the icing on the cake The big red poppy flower they used for the CF title screen actually relates to a famous poem about about WWI, In Flanders Fields . A very sensible statement, isn't it.
And I think I saw a CF2 WIP/making-of at Purplesensi, decent site for us Sensi fans |

Well if I were in a field full of Flanders (simpsons reference) I'd start shooting too.
