Was Golden Axe 3 any good? I do own it (megadrive) but I've never gotten around to playing it.

Was it arcade original?

Golden Axe 3 was not an original arcade game, only on Mega Drive I think.

Golden Axe 2 on Mega Drive is not like the arcade sequel...

Well, take a look here for more information and screenshots...

Mega Drive version:
http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/rev...lden-axe-2.php

Arcade version:
http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?...G&game_id=7968
http://www.classicgaming.com/goldena...de/gatroda.htm

Gilius Thunderhead, Ax Battler and Tyris Flare are not in the Arcade sequel but are in the Mega Drive sequel. In the Arcade version there are 4 totally different characters and the story line is very different also

Yes true Stefan.

Personally I don't really consider these Mega-Tech / Mega-Play / Vs games "real" arcade though... It's just a MegaDrive or Nintendo inside a cabinet

I love Golden Axe, through emulation I've got them all, but I have the Amiga and Mega Drive versions of the first game (originals) too. This is a genre of game that I feel needs to be revisited, even now, when my mates come around we like to have a bash on Golden Axe. The Amiga version's background graphics were closer to the arcade original than the Mega Drive version, although the MD version had more colour and used three buttons instead of one (button+up for jump) and a key for magic.

I somehow want to make a new Amiga game like this, I'm going to start working on sprites and background blocks, but I need a programmer. Who's up for the challenge?

Oh yeah, and Golden Axe 3 on the Mega Drive is a fun game, with nicer sprites than the first two games, and more options when travelling around.

Golden Axe rocks for sure

I played it mainly on the Amstrad CPC - I recall reading about how the coders had to store the sprites compressed and decompress them on the fly while drawing so they could squish the game into 64K of RAM. Pretty impressive I thought !

I've got an Amiga original somewhere, I should dig it out sometime

Yeah, the CPC version is great.
Cool music, hi-res character demo screens and colourful in game gfx.

Thanks Boo Boo, I had heard about this new WHDLoad install for Golden Axe, but I've been waiting for it to be included on a compilation disc before I play it (am I that lazy?). It'll make it so much better, shame they couldn't have added a jump button though. Then again maybe they could make one of the buttons act as Fire+Up. Dunno.

In any case, I really would love to get started working on this game. Thanks for the Golden Axe sprites, but I'm actually going to draw my own. I had an idea to make the game based on well-known fantasy sword swingers from the comics, Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja.

I drew up a Red Sonja sprite this morning, whipped up a quick health bar thing, and stuck it on a background from another game (but with the same style I'd like to see for the backgrounds for this game). Tell me what you think.

nice, this look good

the shadow is wrong, The sun is right above Red sonja but the thing giving a shadow on the road before the bridge must be from the green bush beside the road, indicatng the sun is from behind the bush.

But I would say that the fault is in the background, their shadowpattern is

It'd be nice if someone could port the Beats of Rage engine to classic Amigas and have the games work on 2MB AGA 020 Amigas. Then we could recreate all those arcade games, as well as making new, original games of our own.

Currently the BOR engine runs on everything ELSE, including OS4 Amigas, but it's very CPU intensive.

Seems odd, unless it uses the CPU to do all the graphics (sprites, scrolling etc.) ?

Since it's ported from the PC, I assume it uses the CPU and the GPU for everything, like real shadows under the characters. Someone should just write a brawler creator program from scratch for the Amiga, then a whole heap of good games could start coming out.

More game engines means all the people out there with no programming skills, but like making graphics, can make their own games. Make sure it runs on a stock A1200/CD32 and everyone could play the games, like SEUCK or GRAC/GRAL type games.
