Demo Graphics vs Album Covers

These two fellas from Jesterday (Sanity) and Desert Dream (Kefrens)....

Looks suspiciously similar to these two album covers.

Also the alien in the below pic, I'm sure is used on the virus free pd disk labels and also on the bootblock splash screen, anyone remember/up disks to zone/confirm this?

The alien from the Tankard cover is used in Kefrens' Guardian Dragon 2.

Cougar/Sanity made two renditions of Motörhead album covers.

The artwork from Orgasmatron is used in Interference

The Rock 'n' Roll cover is used in Hospital Since Friday

I think I've seen Tankard's Two-Faced cover somewhere, but I could imagine things here.

Cougar was one of my favourite graphicians because of those pics. Didn't have a clue it was renditions.

No worse for being 'renditions'.

It takes a stunning, stunning, amount of talent to come out with graphics that good. Regardless of the source of the original material.

Roll eyes (sarcastic)

If you think these are scans, you are very mistaken.

I don't think they're scans. I mean that if you scanned them then you could "just" tidy them up.

If only it were that easy.

Don't forget that scanners in those days were pretty awful things. Flat bed scanners were very, very expensive and those hand-held ones that you had to roll over your subject were simply terrible [faster, slower, sloooower, DAMMIT!].

We used one of the rollover types to get the original image of the F.A.S.T 'cartoon' that we modified in the 'F.A.R.T' demo we put out at the SAE party. It took me hours to get the damn thing looking anything like usable. And that was a simple monochrome cartoon. Alignment, noise, lost detail... It was hellish.

The other things that scream 'not a scan' from Cougar's pics :

- Correct aspect ratio - No resizing funnies
- Different perspectives. Especially apparent on the Orgasmatron picture.
- Detail levels. A lot of the detail would have been missed on a scanner - Again, the Orgasmatron picture has tonnes of detail that would have been 'merged' into the surrounding area.
- Colour palettes. This one especially. Cougar's colour selections look more vibrant than the originals. In 32 colours ffs! The guy's a genius!
- Clear differences between the original subject and Cougar's version. Check the teeth e.t.c.

Also things like the technique he's used for the fur effect on the dog. I mean c'mon, that's just amazing! There is no way that's coming from a scan in any way shape or form. It simply would not be possible.

And no, I don't think he used the 'trace onto clingfilm' technique either.

I remember that there was a similar fuss made back in 89 (I think) about a version of the Batman logo used in a D-Mob demo. People cried 'scan' then and were equally mistaken.

Love the old Man'O'War covers. So damn cheesey

edit@Jope: Nice site. I think it's pretty clear which of their two categories I fit into

Did a test. This is the original with 50% transperency over the Amiga pic, and now I'm even more certain he used a scan as the base. Every little stone i exactly as on the album cover. And they align almost perfectly.

What I used to do, and I know others did, is trace an original onto acetate (OHP slides) and then stick that to the monitor.

Sure, it's not nearly as good as creating from scratch but I just didn't have the talent.

The point is that it needn't be a scan...
