Classic Workbench OS3.9 running slow

Hi. Just installed Classic Workbench OS3.9 and it looks lovely and all but its a lot slower than my previous classic workbench ADVSP 3.1 install.
I was wondering is there's any way to speed it up?
I used the high colour version vs the 16 colour themes.

I have an A1200 (68030), 3.1 rom and ACA 1232 128mb ram.

Thanks

Ok, I must admit that I never tried to install ClassicWB OS 3.9 yet.
But nevertheless, you could give my icon.library 46.4 a chance to speed up your icon loading a bit (or 2 bits or more)

http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/IconLib_46.4

Copy libs/icon.library_68020 Libs:icon.library

If it's still not fast enough after replacing the icon.library in Libs: then you could also try out the faster colormapping mode which can be enabled in Sys:Prefs/Workbench by setting the icon quality to "Bad". This will reduce the quality indeed a little, but it can also give an additional speed boost for your icons.

The loading of truecolor icons can also be accelerated. PNG icons just have to be converted by the WB menu function "Snapshot" and the OS4 icons can be converted by the WB function "Icon Information" by writing them back to disk.

Besides using PeterKĀ“s icon.library, just disable some items from your WBStartup drawer by moving them to some other drawer (you can use the Expansions drawer if you wish). Disable what you dont really need as some of these are cpu hungry.

Reboot and voila!

You can also gain better performance using some of the acatune enhancements, the most important one being maprom.

I have the os3.9 rom already loaded by maprom and along with PeterK's Icon Library it's running nice and fast on the same hardware here.

Also using PeterK's icon.library and it is helping quite a bit on the speed. Another thing that helps with the desktop speed is having cgxmaster.library in libs: to enable CyberGraphX modes and then enabling CyberBugFix.
I am also using Cosmos' updated libs in my custom ROM.

First of all what is your declaration of ACATune? If you don't run ACATune then your accelerator can perform rather slow!

Secondly, what things are you running? BlazeWCP, FBlit/FText, EnvHandler are enabled? If you don't have PeterK's icon.library (which I TOTALLY recommend) then you should at least enable IconsBeFast as well.
As Gulliver said, disabling some things from WBStartup may speed your experience as well.

An A1200 (that doesn't have the crappy limitations of ECS chipset) with a 030 (especially an ACA) must be rather speedy in ClassicWB 3.9. I can tell that in real certainty as I run a customized version of ClassicWB 3.9 on my A600 and it's BLAZING fast on 8 colors. Ofc I removed AmiDock and also changed the icons as in 8 colors everything like GlowIcons looks like washed out icons lol and NewIcons was really OUT of my taste. (you can see by yourself [ Show youtube player ])

The High Colour version runs in 256 colour screenmode so that will slow things down. Works nice in WinUAE though!

Try reducing the screenmode to 64 colours and use the other updates as per the advice given above. I think OS39 always ran a little more sluggish than OS35 and standard Workbench 3.0/1 on real Amiga hardware.

V28 packs will have PeteK icon support built in as a user selectable option, thanks to PeterK.

I wouldn't use more than 16 colors with an ACA1232 - it gets too slow with more.

It should be ok with 64 colours and PeterK's Icon library, IIRC that's what I normally run unless I'm feeling he need for excessive speed then I drop down to 16 colours and strap in tight! ZoooooooooooooooM!

Again the correct ACATune declaration, Maprom and other optimisations help

Well, it is subjective what people prefer. Already using PeterK's icon.library, CGX, ACAtune with maprom etc., but I'll rather have a speedier low color desktop than a pretty sluggish one. I can almost feel my blood pressure rising if I go above 16 colors.

I've added the library to libs and it seems to be faster now. It's not deadly slow though. A couple of things... What is ACATune declaration? Is it a config tool for the ACA1232. I think I remember using this when I had my 3.1 workbench install. Also. Do I need maprom since I've alredy got 3.1 roms? I thought this was for people who had 3.0?
Cheers

Did you try out the faster colormapping mode too which can be enabled in Sys:Prefs/Workbench by setting the icon quality to "Bad"?

yes I did do that aswell I have left it on 256 colour mode though, as I think 16 looks crap. but maybe I'll change it when I get hold of some optimised 16 colour patterns.

With CWB39 you can use Rebel's palette, it's one of the options, and the best (for me) to use images from 16 colors.

An ACA1232 can't never run right with 256 colors. 64 is enough as Fitzsteve said, but it also depends on your screen size, programs running, etc.

Edit: Also, please make a test with SysInfo, to see how many MIPS you've got, I don't know how much can it get either.
