Amiga Games you play with your kids

Which game did you choose to introduce your kid into the world of Amiga games?

What age did you choose for introducing?

Does your kid like these "old pixel games" (in kids point of view) with handcrafted graphics or does he prefer the modern 3D like?

Which games are your kids favourites?

Do you think your kid will have great memories of the time when he was playing old games with dad when grown up?

What other retro stuff did you choose to present your kid the days when dad was young? For example movies.

So far only shown my 19 year old twin boys New Zealand Story, and Batman.

...but could they stop playing? Of course not.

I love to show my stepson (11 years old) the media and games world of my youth.

It fills my heart with a very warm feeling when he likes games or movies that I used to like in my young years.

It's important for me to create great memories in his mind. I hope very much that his memories of me will be like this: "My stepdad introduced me to all this great retro stuff. I had a wonderful time with him playing old games and watching old movies. Because of him I know Indiana Jones, Turrican, Ghostbusters and Wing Commander."

I started to introduce him at the age of 7.
I don't remember the first game I showed to him. But I remember him using the word "old pixel games". That hurts me a little. But slowly he fell in love with some of dads old pixel games.

His favourites are so far:

Wings of Fury
Turrican 2 and 3
Wing Commander (we played together, I was responsible for the afterburner and speed)
Rubicon (because it consists of bosses all the time)

Sadly he doesn't like adventure games (he doesn't like to read which is bad in general) or car racing games.

He had a hard time with jumping in games. He's really not good at. He used to call me and I do the difficult jumps for him.


Sometimes we talk about movies we watched years ago and he remembers many scenes. So I show him more and more.

Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the future, Demolition Man, Timecop, Terminator, Kickboxer, Naked gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, Spaceballs, Robocop 3 (1 and 2 are too violent), Rush Hour, Star Trek, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, Ghostbusters, Clash of the titans, Karate Kid...

Now he is able to understand most of the references to movies in Family Guy.

The first Amiga game my "mini-Godzillas" have ever played was "Loom".
They did finish it and greatly enjoyed it (even if they were a bit scared with the death at the end).

Then, they played :
- "Zak McKracken And The Alien Mindbenders" (~1/3 done... but they are stuck) ;
- "Maniac Mansion" (~1/4% done... but they are stuck) ;
- "The Secret Of Monkey Island" (they finished it) ;
- "Simon The Sorcerer" (they finished it) ;
- "Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge" (~3/5 done... but they are stuck) ;
- "Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade" (the one they are playing the most actually)

Also they like to help me judging the games for the contest

Edit : For adventure games : I do not play with them, I introduce the game and then they play alone. I only play a bit with them when they ask for help. But as they like to find by themself, it's not very often.

How old are your Mini-Godzillas?
Maybe they are more interested in non-action-games when they are older.

I don't encourage one type of game more than another. They play others games mainly on mini-consoles (big N) and censor themselves (they are afraid of zombies in Ghosts'n Goblins (& how the knight is dying) but are fan of Bubble Bobble, Mario Kart, Street Fighter or Kirby. In fact they don't like to play games with "humans" and "guns/violence" -> except "Street Fighter" that for them is "martial art/kung-fu" : so it's cool ).

As they are less excited after the play, I like when they choose an adventure games .
Also, another advantage of adventure games is that they make work their grey cells (brain) and help each other to try to solve puzzles and explore the places.
But the game is after the homework and a cleaned room. First the "work" and then the "leisure" .

I think the clue was Loom. It's easy enough for a child to get in it and progress (no verb to click/inventory to browse). I don't know if they would be playing adventure games like they do actually if I had introduced with another first game.
Also they only play adventures games in their mother-tongues. It also helped them progress in reading (at the beginning, when they couldn't read good enough, I helped them by reading the texts (with different voices )).

Less than 10 .
The biggest first played Loom at the age of ~5 (when he was recovering at home) . The smallest discovered Loom at about the same age.

This is an excellent question. I don't have kids myself but my brother is expanding the family so eventually I am going to introduce his little demons to retro games, including the Amiga. This thread is definitely going to help prepare for the first gaming session.

Silkworm definitely yes, those kind of mass destruction shooters with loud noises tend to do quite well.

Chip's Challenge, Supaplex, Lost Vikings, Fury of the Furries, Twintris, Dynablaster/Bug Bomber, Logical, Plotting, Puzznic - no doubt about it. And probably two dozen other similar games, the Amiga was so good for games with puzzle elements.

Double Dragon 2, heck yeah. Cartoonish, bloodless beat em up violence for two people that looks and sounds really funny.

I guess Wonderboy in Monsterland although I may just go with the arcade original. The framerate is a problem but the loading times in the Amiga version... I can't sell that to kids.

My kids played SuperFrog (original on Amiga as well new SuperFrogHD), Lemmings, Monkey Island and Zak McKracken. In Lucas Arts adventures they love humor.

Superfrog HD ? where is this creation to purchase ?
