A Look at Gauntlet (4 player arcade action rpg)
Hi, guys. I was just thinking, what if Commodore had had millions of dollars back in...Just kidding!
Anyway, here's the latest episode of Matt Chat. This week I look at one of my favorite arcade games, Gauntlet. I thought I had played Gauntlet on my Amiga, but I must have been thinking of Gauntlet II? At any rate, I did play a Gauntlet to death on my Amiga 1000 with my sister. Now, of course, I can play it with my wife using the original arcade version and my dual x-arcade! Good times! Here's the link: [ Show youtube player ] |

Nice, one of the first games I tried on my ultra-crappy 4 player multiplayer adaptor
Great as always Matt, keep'em coming! |

Ha, nice coincidence. Just found the vid on my YT start page Again a very good review Matt Like the part about why Gauntlet was designed the way it is.
Maybe you think of Garrison? Never got how the deal between Rainbow Arts and Atari was, because this is almost an 1:1 ripoff |

"Don't shoot your food." That's true.
Another fine retrospective, Matt. I still love this dungeon crawler classic, which inspired Diablo a lot. |

Yup, another great review
I like the clever design of the arcade, so 4 people could play, and the players health went down slowly no matter what, and when close to 0, the players get a warning message :P... all this to keep the players feeding the machine with more coins. It's great you look all these things up (or taken from experience) in your reviews. |

Another great review/look back at a classic game. I always hated the health system, but it did add a some tension to the game, especially when you are low on life and a hundred things are coming straight for you.

Ahh, so they even made it so you could shoot the food?.. meh, such bastards ... Anything to keep the players put in coins more frequently

Hehe, yeah, this machine was all about the quarters. Yet it still somehow worked even when ported to home machines. I didn't know about Garrison, but yes, that definitely looks like a rip to me. I always thought Into the Eagle's Nest was similar, too, but I don't think it had the 4-player multiplayer. Obviously that was easier on some machines than others depending on their # of joystick ports. The ST one could apparently use "midi joysticks" in addition to regular joysticks.
Thanks for all the great comments! |

I also like the Druid series (Druid, Enlightenment: Druid II and Warlock the Avenger). Pretty hard but good games. There are tons of Gaunlet clones, but Garrison is indeed the best.

If you were saying that Druid II is a gauntlet clone, then I will have to disagree. |

Druid is no 1:1 gauntlet clone, but it shares a lot of game elements. So yes, for me it's a "gauntlet style" game.

It does have a lot of similarities, but it's not a clone, but apparently the original, which wasn't released on the Amiga, was a clone according to HOL.
"[1] Sequel to 8-bit GAUNTLET clone DRUID, which did not receive a standalone Amiga conversion but was included as an optional introductory level in Millennium's enhanced update WARLOCK THE AVENGER." |

Druid 1 is pretty similar to Druid 2. Gauntlet clone isn't valid then too.
