Looking for an A1200 sampler...

I'm wanting to get a sampler for my A1200, I have a large collection of vintage analogue synths, as well as a lot of modular gear, which I'd like to sample to use in Octamed. What's the best sampler I can get for the money (looking for a balance of value vs quality)?

Yeah, I've been looking for a sampler for years and ended up just shelling out for a 16 bit sound card. I couldn't find anything, and got no replies to any of the listings I put up in WANTED forums. The upcoming sampler by Echolevel really looks like a winner, and exactly what I was looking for all that time. I'll still get a couple of they manage to do a run of these

There were plenty of schematics floating around back in the day, I'm sure you could even find some in old Amiga magazines with a little bit of digging. Aminet has a couple of examples too.

They are all basically the same garbage, your best bet is what you found already, the Open Sampler project.
People that have these for sale nowadays believe they are made of unobtainium and price them accordingly. Do not buy any of them.

It was a crap one anyway. You'd be better off waiting for the open amiga samplers to start appearing.

Best to just sample on something else tbh. Just about everything these days has a halfway decent ADC in it. No sense trying to replicate the crappy parallel port samplers of old. With good samples you can then stick them on your Amiga and push Paula to her best possible capabilities.

Back in the day when good samplers were still kinda expensive I'd use my CD-ROM drive to rip samples onto my Amiga. Obviously I couldn't sample my own stuff (CD burners were still ridiculously expensive) but I could sample music I had or even sound effect/foley CDs from the public/school library. Even mixed down to 8-bit those sounds came out way, way, way better than anything I got through my parallel port sampler.

I found one way, mileage may vary for you but for me I like it and it works!

Renoise for the sourcing of samples, sounds etc.

Protracker for Windows.

Protracker for windows is pretty smart for what it is! You can load 16bit wav samples and save them back out as 8bit iff. Exactly what the Amiga wants.

You have to fart about a bit, bringing octaves up, shunting from 44khz to 22khz but if you get a sweet spot the samples you end up with are miles better than by going the oldschool way of sampler cart and audio leads. Somethings are better that way though! but for me it was just easier this way, lack of space and no motivation to set my stuff up.

I have 16bit amiga zorro soundcards cards aswell just not actually used them yet.

Go for cheap ARM MCU with embedded ADC, most of them are over 10 -12 bit resolution (some are equipped with two or more simultaneously sampling ADC's so stereo is possible without phase issues) and offer way better quality than cheap common 8 bit ADC, side to this you can perform oversampling and filtering (70MHz 32 bit ARM is capable to do high quality audio processing) also samples can be buffered so MCU may work as jitter remover/filter - and funniest part - probably such ARM board will be cheaper than 8 bit ADC.
