You should download Codetapper's install of it here and run it with WHDLoad:

What's the exact problem with the WHDLoad install?
I've also uploaded an ADF of The Deep to the Zone (see the top of this webpage). |

The ADF definitely works in the latest version of WinUAE!
To use a WHDLoad install, you need to set up an A1200 type system in WinUAE, create a hard disk and then install the WHDLoad package from www.whdload.de . After that run the game from the downloaded archive. |

DAMN!
Moscow ... er ... Cody, we've got a problem.
It *could* be that BOTH dumps of TOSEC are faulty. It could also be that WinUAE has a bug here. Looking at that special kind of graphics bug, I really don't think it's WinUAE's fault, but who knows. See yourself - freeze is in the zone. I finally got to this point, after 2 1/2 hours of persistent playing! PHEW! This game is TOUGH! Does anyone have another NON-TOSEC ADF dump of "The Deep" he could upload for deep (pun alert) testing? Last edited by andreas; 30 November 2003 at 09:08. |

*not giving up (yet)*
OK, today I've transferred BOTH TOSEC images to my real A1000 and played them ... you guessed it: till the screen above appeared.
Then I could finish the level despite the graphics errors - but after the part with the destroyer rushing towards me, the game FROZE. So what we have in TOSEC is definitely two broken disks. Due to the Action HQ web site not being updated since three months, I even asked Codetapper via PM to send me his WHD installer, hoping that the disk image used there is working --- but didn't get a reply (yet). So does anyone happen to have this game on real disk, preferrably the same crack but a version that works beyond this point? Thanks again in advance. :hoo |

Codetapper is on holidays for a couple of weeks, Andreas, so you won't get an answer for a little while.

Will this mystery ever be solved?
A long time after writing this post, I got the CAPS version in my hands eventually, and played it.
Damnit! Level 5 is still OK, then graphics crap comes up as before. This time I was cleverer though, as I made a WinUAE save-state file of the last level of level 5 now, so try yourself! Either there were some The Deep versions shipped that had this bug, or it's really an emulator problem. The latter is unlikely, since my trusty A1000 shows same graphics crap after playing the cracked version. Or it really happens to be a nifty kind of copy protection which is extremely hard to bypass. If it was copy protection, track errors, or a corrupt master disk we would know about it. In terms of protection, because of the way our technology works, there is no notion of "hard to bypass". It may be difficult to implement support for something, but it wouldn't have been released until it was 100% obviously.
It is. Basically: That is how the game is then. It is possible that you may have some machine settings different than unintended, it could be some obscure game bug - like only having bugs with/without slow mem, blitter problems etc, or it could just be due to a un/badly tested game. The disk is fully authentic and has 6 checksums to pass per track. So this is as good as the game will ever get without someone hacking it. Given Emerald's track record, we are not that much surprised about this. Last edited by fiath; 09 January 2004 at 09:46. |

Interesting....
Perhaps is it one of the following: 1) Config problem 2) IPF version is from a buggy release of the game, and was later fixed 3) WHDLoad version fixed/changed something that corrected the problem We'll do some investigating... |

Meanwhile I've got several "WHD versions" and all of them used the cracked Defjam version as 'Disk.1'! Codetapper himself can confirm that when he wrote that installer, he merely had the cracked version handy! He got the original much later, but the installer is still on the todo list. Okay to get this resolved:
Play the *cracked version* from disk (see below), and see if it shows the same error. If yes, case closed, Codetapper fixed a screwed game! If no, there is a working original out there and we'll find it. DON'T use the WHDLoad version for this it will reveal nothing about this issue, logically. DO play the same cracked version used for the install. Codetapper is going to tell which exact crack was used for the install, so you should only play that. |

I was talking about plasmatron's WHDLoad version.
Do you actually know if that crack is the version Codetapper used in his install? That is the point. You just said "cracked version" - but is there more than one? Sure, play (plasmatron's) WHDLoad version, I'm just saying it won't solve anything because it may be that WHDLoad that fixes the issue. i.e. won't help finding out if the original game is screwed or not. |

Just ask Codetapper to confirm it BTW, I've also played the [b2] version with same negative results. Quote:
This *.lzx contains the Defjam - CCS - Spreadpoint version widely available and therefore there's really no point in playing that because when I transferred this one to my A1000, it showed same graphics crap after level 5. Sorry ... none the wiser. Last edited by andreas; 09 January 2004 at 22:35. |
