A500+ Freezes

Hi All,

Is there any specific Amiga diagnostic progs that can help with an issue I have please?

I have an A500+ running ApolloOS 8.1 (core) and v8.2 of the Desktop OS (I'm using a Vampire V4 Firebird).

Most of the time there are no issues, but then I get a spate of desktop freezes and only a CAA will fix it (although the odd occasion It freezes doing this too).

I've run mem checkers and all reports ok? TBH I can't remember if my A500+ was doing this before the vampire was plugged in as I haven't used the Amiga for years. Before I unplug the Vampire, are there any other tests I can do please?

Thanks in advance,

Darren

Does the machine still have the original CPU socket? If so, then I would strongly recommend getting it replaced with a new one and preferably a turned pin socket.

My experience with CPU socket accelerators is any instability is often caused by a bad connection in this socket. My own A500+ with an TF536 accelerator in the CPU socket also had the occasional glitch but after replacing the CPU socket with a new turned pin socket those issues were resolved.

Sockets tend to get oxidized over time, and these machines are 30 years old now..

Hi demolition,

Thanks for the response. Yes it still has the original socket.

TBH, I had read somewhere else ages ago to consider replacing the CPU socket. I'm unfamiliar with a 'turned pin socket' but I'll look around for one to replace.

Thanks again, its much appreciated.

They look like this:

And you can stack several of them to lift your accelerator until it clears the components on the motherboard. I think I have two between the MB socket and the Vampire.
