CD/DVD Drive Maximum Speed

Yet another "fastest" thread.

After working out speed for hard drive through the Acard adapters approaches 30MB/s max thru the CSPPC UW-SCSI, I was wondering how fast can ppl read data from their CD and DVD drives?

As an example, using SysInfo, it tells me I can read CDs at 2.8MB/s and DVDs at 5MB/s. This is a LOT less than I was expecting as I have a 48x (7.2MB/s) CD drive and 16x (22MB/s) DVD drive!!

Anyone know what I can do to improve speed? (Note that the EIDE DVDRW I have is on one of those Acard SCSI-IDE adapters on my CSPPC UW-SCSI) I tried to use SysSpeed to see the speed, but it only works with hard drives for me.

Do different CD filesystems make any difference?

Even ppl with SCSI CDROMs or the FastATA please respond so I can see what speeds are possible with those interfaces.

It depends on what area of the CD / DVD is being read. CLV vs CAV. Google it up. :-)

The "X" value of the drive is only the maximum speed it can attain at the fastest area of the disc.

Ah, silly me! Yes you are very right. I do know those terms, just needed to apply them! That has put me at ease. Yeah, the start of the disc is usually slower and will not be even close to full speed on the faster drives.

Is there any Amiga CD Speed program such as the ones which exist for the PC (e.g. Nero CD-DVD Speed) which graph the speed over the entire CD/DVD area?

Well I guess I could try to write to DVD at 8x and 16x using FryingPan on a full DVD to see if it works.
