Something about the colours

Pay attention to the image above, can you spot the difference? if so, what you're seeing on the left is the way WinUAE outputs Workbench 1.3's colours here. On the right, the way my A500 does it. Basically WinUAE's colours are brighter, but not that much.

Screenshots/videos taken with WinUAE and screenshots taken by a third party Windows software show exactly the same colours, which may rule out the possibility of this being a problem with WinUAE's internal rippers.

On the other hand, screenshots taken on my real A500 with "ScreenSave" show exactly the same colours as the screenshots taken on WinUAE with the same piece of software, so if ScreenSave is actually seeing the same colours on both systems, then it should be safe to assume that this has nothing to do with OCS emulation.

Now question is, why the difference? which one is getting the colours right? WinUAE or ScreenSave?

Given that no setting appeared to have an effect on the output, this could very well be an incorrectly positioned Brightness/Gamma control, but I have been unable to find the right spot.

Before going into depth, any preliminary comment to either confirm or dismiss this issue?

Cheers

Hmm, not necessarily, unless they intended it to be white, but that I don't know. Remember that interlaced monitors and SDTV's in general are brighter, so it would make sense to use darker colours to avoid saturating the screen.

I think you missed the point of KG's post. We asks why you say that they are exactly the same in one sentence and different in another.

Look at the two sentences I quoted.

One says "EXACTLY THE SAME".

One says "WHY THE DIFFERENCE".

I think you misread something, but not sure what exactly.

Right, I got it after some serious re-reading.

Good luck with your problem

I re-read your initial post now and see what you mean. Have you checked that both pictures have the same colour-depth?

@killergorilla: thanks, though I'm not really boethered enough to call it a problem. At this point is mere curiosity

@TCD: nope, WinUAE's 24bit and ScreenSave's 2bit.

My crystal balls says your image viewer does not properly convert OCS/ECS Amiga 4 bits per color component to full 8 bits. (for example white FFF becomes F0F0F0 instead of FFFFFF). Or screensave does the same when saving palette information.

Well, I did not convert it, I used XnView and IrfanView to open the image and check the rgb values, and both applications report the same.

Edit: I should probably try some Amiga software that will save to 24bit. I'll see what's on Aminet.

Yep, that was probably it. Can't find any accurate screen grabber for WB13 so I can't run any more test on my A500, but screenshots taken with WinUAE and screenshots taken with SGrab on an emulated WB31 environment, match a 100%.

Thank you all for your help
