Cannot format real amiga hard drive in winuae

i created a sd card image of windows 3.1 many months for my amiga 1200

now ive got amiga os 3.2 i want to format part the main partition and install 3.2 on it (the old install is too modified to update)

but i cannot get the drive to function correctly in winuae

the drive is detected as RDB
when i boot from the amigaos3.2 install disk the hard drive partitions appear (both workbench and my games partition)

but i cant do anything with them.

if i try and format one of them. the format will look like its functioning (no errors) but does nothing and the old content just reappears afterwards

same with hdtoolbox. if i try and delete a partition or move one etc and 'save changes to drive' nothing happens at all. the data just reappears on workbench as if i never did anything.

the hard drive does say 'R/W no' in winuae
but i cant select the option to turn on Read Write because its greyed out

the drive was setup originally as PFS3.
options are IDE(auto) for the drive.

like i say this sd card functions perfectly on my amiga 1200, but with no cddrive or gotek i need winuae to install 3.2

edit - i am running winuae as admin in windows 10.
its 4.4.0 64bit version

edit - im using the kickstart 3.2 roms for A1200 on winuae

edit - i have tried copying files to the partitions and they look like they copy fine, but once i 'reset' winuae the files are gone from the partitions.
there is activity on the sdcard reader im using whenever i do any file related stuff
(same card reader i used to create the drive to start with)

any help please?

SD cards (not micro-SD) have a write protect switch. Make sure it is write enabled.

Also try the Lock checkbox in WinUAE / Add Harddrive.

interesting. what does that do exactly?

it sounds like it would lock the drive from being written to. are you suggesting it doesnt?
kinda sounds counter intuitive.

i will check that later though when im back home.

I suggest yes, you need to add a check mark !

i just tried adding a check mark to 'lock'

unfortunately it didnt make any difference.

i still cannot make any changes to the sd card at all.

if i try and format one of the partitions. it will look like it works, even displaying dh0:busy as it formats.
but then the old partition reappears complete with all contents and custom icons etc

same with trying to copy files or partition it.

its like the drive doesnt exist even though you can see everything on it and winuae sees and recognises it.

So before using this on WinUAE you have used windows DiskPart to clean the SD card?

Which Kickstart ROM/workbench are you using to format the SD Card?

Which file system are you using?

The parameters you have used to setup the partitions in HDToolbox?

Have had something similar happen to me using WinUAE in the past. It can be anything from the make of SD card to the settings or ROM used.

Noticed you are using 3.2 and PFS3 with auto (IDE) in WinUAE.

Try in WinUAE from Auto (IDE) to uaehf.device
On workbench HDToolbox change the device setting by using icon->Information on workbench pull down menu to Device=uaehf.device then launch HDToolbox and try deleting and make new partition again.
Then try the format again.

Or

Use a different ROM like 3.1.4 and try using that to setup and format the partition.

Just did what up or suggests today as works well. I also need to run my WinUAE as administrator when plugging in my compact flash card into my PC. If I don’t, I don’t get write access to the drive.

they only thing ive managed to get working is to add the sd card as a hard drive and then select the option to create hard disk image file.
winuae reads the drive and creates a 15gb hdf file

that file can be used properly

all i need to do now is figure out how to write it back to the sd card once im done updating

Probably there is some incompatibility, delete all partitions on Windows with a program that manages Partitions, you must make the SD Card "RAW" without any partition and without formatting, no Filesystem must be present.

After that from HDToolBox initialize and create the partitions maybe using a good Filesystem like SFS or PFS, after that save and restart the Amiga and format "quickly" the new partitions.

Run winuae with -log command parameter (winuae.exe -log), click Add harddrive, add the drive. (Do not load any config, do not start emulation)

Check the log window (or open winuaebootlog.txt in text editor). Does it report any errors? Or attach whole winuaebootlog.txt.

It locks the drive from Windows so that WinUAE has exclusive access to it.

If locking fails it would mean that some other program still holds it, for example the anti-virus software.

Just reading your message again, I think you are confusing 'hardfile' with 'hard drive'. The former creates a file that is a virtual hard drive. It is not something that the Amiga will see or understand. As Toni says in his message, you need to add a 'hard drive' which will be your SD card. Once that is done, you can go through the process with HDtoolbox and formatting.

no im not confusing it
i use winuae to create a virtual hard drive from the sd card itself.
its an option in the hard drive menu in winuae.

i will attach a log shortly

Log looks fine (IOCTL errors are normal, ATA passthrough is rare and SD isn't using ATA protocol anyway)

There is no logging if read-write open fails, it is retried in read-only mode and it seems to succeed. (Logging will be in next version, makes this situation less confusing)

Which means error is either ERROR_WRITE_PROTECT (exactly what it says) or ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION (something else already has it open in read-write mode)

Unfortunately I have no idea what is the cause. For example it could be some anti-virus/security software.

To figure out what's locking the drive or file, I would suggest Process Explorer (this should be everyone's task manager replacement by default ).

- Download and run
- Go to the Find -> Find Handle or DLL menu entry.
- Type the drive name, such as H:\ and search.

It should show any processes that have a lock. From there you can release the lock, close the program, etc.

For example, I was given the following:

Ensure you use I: or I:\ instead of I:/ since Windows uses backslashes. A forward slash will bring up no results.

If that still doesn't bring up anything, then I'm not sure. As others have said, it's general an antivirus issue but we can't say for sure since every system's setup is different.

Looking for I:\ won't help. It is not accessed via drive letter because there is no Windows compatible filesystem. Lock checkbox will unmount Windows filesystem(s) automatically if selected drive has any mounted.

This is something lower level.
