WIP: Breathless --> GZDoom engine

Just messing around in Ultimate Doom Builder:

not bad for a first attempt. I have a lot to learn, but it's a start.

Heh, it's just running in the only version of GZDoom I have available

Anyway, I've pretty much got the first level's map complete. Still need sprites for enemies and pickups, and sound effects need to be ripped also.

And mapping for GZDoom is a continual headache while I figure out how to do what I want it to do

I remember having so much fan with Breathless on my stock Amiga 1200, but not playing so much, bu trying different res, and trying best speed-look feel.
Well, overall - it was terribly slow.

But I liked, when I raise setting up to the max, how it looked. Haven't seen anything like that.

@Danny
Will you try improving gameplay feel a little bit, or you want to do exactly the same as original?
Keep up the great work!

Looks good Dunny

Shall I move these "Breathless" --> "GZDoom" engine posts to a new thread?

Actually, done anyway...

Breathless was the game that finally made me cough up the cash for a Blizzard MK IV and never looked back since! So, for me, it'd be amazing to have a remake on a modern engine!

It would be awesome to have Breathless with nice gun sprites and monsters acting more like Doom ones.

Thanks DamienD

Here's a small gallery of the first level's map - now complete and seems to work. Now I need to see about getting the sounds and sprites out of the Breathless game files.

So Last night I got lifts/platforms working, the whole first level is now done. Again, no enemies and no scripting as of yet.

If anyone has any idea how to rip the sprites and sound effects then I'm all ears. In the meantime I'll continue to map the levels and learn more about mapping.

What is the res of these textures you're currently using? For example, that wall texture?
I wonder, if we can up-res it even more.

And what would be the limit of that up-res texture (the limit of Z-Doom engine)?

Currently there are none that are larger than 128x128 (the original resolution of the Breathless textures). Increasing the resolution with better artwork would be a great bonus, but I'd like to get the whole thing done (at least the maps) before I start considering that.

Thanks.
Yeah, that makes sense.
128x128 isn't little for the time, no wonder Breathless looked so advanced.

Not necessarily better artwork.
I'd personally try to stay as close to the original, but just upresing them.

Something similar for the Might and Magic 6, little project I did:

Amazing work, Dunny.

Now this is something I want to see happening. Breathless was always THE Amiga's finest Doom clone for me, mostly for standing firmly on its own and not trying to blindly rip off the Doom vibe (starting with not trying to rhyme with Doom)

Enemies are the weakest point of the game but I totally love the atmosphere and still remember the pure joy of booting up the game for the first time and starting playing in crisp 1x1 resolution. The etheric soundtrack never received nearly as much appreciation as it should've.

You'd be surprised by how similar a breathless map is to a vanilla Doom map. I mean, they're really, really close in their mechanics including their texture management (three textures per wall with varying ceiling/floor heights) and per-sector lighting.

But yes, this is really good fun. I'm learning as I go though, so it will take a while.
