TFV#46 - Atari ST vs Amiga 500.... Duelling Banjos!!! - This is awesome beyond words!

It doesn't matter which retrogaming group you join, at some point someone will cause a flame war between the two rivals the Amiga and Atari ST. When I grew up I didn't care what system was being played I enjoyed them both, which can't be said for some peoples viewpoints. However we are about to show you a video, where two classic computers team up in almost perfect harmony... Welcome to TFV#46 - Atari ST vs Amiga 500.... Duelling Banjos!!!

I reckon the Amiga is doing the heavy lifting in that particular duet! Trust Atari to bring a Casio to a KORG fight.

Still way cool, though.

Atari STE is playing channels 1,3,4 @ 12Khz
Amiga 500 is Playing channels 1,2,3 @ 8Khz. Low pass filter is on.

The ST has better bass but the sample mixing has hisses.
The Amiga is clearer but sounds more "tinny"....

And thats listening to them on studio monitor headphones.

Honestly there is bugger all difference between them.

Great video to watch
Atari and Amiga shouldn't fight each other, we've had more than enough of this.

It can do that @ 25khz ; not all player programs can but it's doable and has been done.

As it's apparently running under some Protracker version, I doubt it's doing any mixing at all. Where does that "8khz" come from ?

They're both using protracker. Slightly different versions. The amiga sounds worse if anything.. really tinny.

Indeed. But it's hard to beat 1Mhz sound... yes 1MhZ!!! The Archie just uses a second video DMA channel as audio... crack smoking...

This is largely due to the low quality of your source material and not the limitations of the Paula.

How about you try composing your own version of duelling banjos using higher quality samples instead of just using the MOD that came on the cover of Amiga Computing which uses generic samples from the ST-XX disks. I think you may find that a MOD version of this song which uses higher quality samples would sound far better on the Amiga and tinny on the ST.

Its an STE btw... so the hardware is *almost* identical.

EDIT: and as far as producing sound goes.. they both suck .. 8 bit linear DACs..

Try the STe replay at 50 khz and compare. My ears could never tell the difference. Both sound damn good.
Let's compare the archie to the Falcon next 50 khz 16 bit mixing!

I did try this but the STE fell out of step with the Amiga very quickly.

Archie vs Falcon.. Thats interesting 1Mhz 8 bit uLaw vs 50Khz 16 Bit... should be a close match... just need to buy my Falcon back

why such low frequency? This is replay frequency or sample frequency... ?

Amiga and STe have simple different sound. I prefer STe since I grown up with one

and yes, please compare Falcon and Archi if you buy back Falcon
