Floppy disk Weird CF problem (maybe...)

Hi y'all,

I've acquired 2 IDE-CF adaptors and a 2Gb and a 4Gb Sandisk Ultra II CFs. I've prepped the cards in WinUAE using HDInsttools 6.9 to partition. I've done a base install of OS3.1 on both cards using bog standard FFS. Both cards work, i.e. boot up and load the OS when run in WinUAE (-disableharddrivesafetycheck + add hard drive (ide0/scsi.device etc. shows up as RDB) However, they don't boot when installed in my A1200 - the HD light goes on at half brightness and flickers. I don't think it's the CF adaptors as I have a small 256Mb CF which boots up fine with OS3.1.

Hilfe!

It could be the cards are not FIXED type but REMOVABLE.

You can use the tool (ATCFWCHG.COM) to convert to FIXED using your IDE->CF adapter and an x86 PC with a native PATA IDE interface.

atcfwchg.com /P /F

Many thanks - I suspected as much. The parititions are visible if I boot from a floppy. I thought thr RDBs were corrupt at first, then i remembered about the fixed vs. removable thing.

Thanks for the help complete with helpful pic!

P.S. My PC is SATA will I be able to run this utility? Do I copy it to the CF drive and then run it?

Yeah, an older one from 2-3 years ago with PATA built into the chipset.

Use a PC at work or borrow a mates if he'll let you disassemble it.

It has to be set as a MASTER on the primary IDE channel

Hi again,

I managed to run the atcfwchg.com util on my 2 sandisk CFs and they both got a PASS. However, now I still can't boot from them. I tried to run hdinsttools again and repartition and add a filesystem. The process appears to work but upon rebooting the partitions don't appear to have taken...

Am I missing something out of the process?

Does your IDE->CF card use an IDE cable? If so try using a shorter cable.

Interesting..but my IDE cable is appx. 4 inches long - I've never seen shorter ones. Should I try fiddling with MAXTRANSFER?
