Why not to load the problematic file in Winuae / PPaint, and first see if it works, then if it does, re-save it from there, to see if that fixes it?

But, what version of Gimp are they refering to here…

Libre Arts

Weekly recap — 23 April 2023

https://librearts.org/2023/04/week-r...apr-2023/#gimp

GIMP
We shouldn’t be expecting lots of new features at this stage of development, but CmykStudent squeezed a few things in anyway. GIMP now loads indexed ILBM, Amiga PBM, and ACBM images

I find Irfanview great for converting IFF’s into other formats. Never tried going to IFF with it though. Must try that.

Same, it's versatile, lightweigth, and lighting fast.

I like to use PPaint for conversions too, it has decent colour reduction algorithms and can handle all the major image formats.

I've used IrfanView for years. I use it almost daily to crop/rotate etc.
Definately worth donating to. You can register for 10 EUR.

It opens the IFF in the zone fine.

But to the two points of the original node:
- have you ascertained whether the original image is somehow broken or not?
- meaning, can you open it in PPaint in emulation, or even diropus?
- if the file is visible in the two programs, is it viable to use PPaint to resave it under emulation, so that even DPaint can open it?

Also, maybe Retro Image Tool (online tool, can save IFF files)?

I think the issue is that the CAMG chunk is missing.
The header is extremely simple in the file that doesn't work.
I think the amiga programs are expecting Amiga specific info in order to be happy.
I tried PPaint and it didn't like it either.
In any case:
1 - My really simple python script now reads out BODY chunk into raw biplanes, no issue which was the object of the entire exercise, so I can get my graphics straight out of Photoshop and into my game.
2 - Why on earth was I bothering with a problematic format like IFF when there are other modern, perfectly usable palletised image formats I could use instead? I guess I just wanted to keep IFF in my toolchain for added retro goodness.

Most programs will handle a missing CAMG chunk; it is not strictly a compulsory chunk.

The real problem is the overall file length stored in the 5th..8th bytes of the file being odd, which is not permissible for an IFF. I've uploaded a fixed version to the Zone.

I've noticed that non-Amiga programs very often have padding bugs like this in their IFF handling. Whereas most Amiga programs probably use iffparse.library to do it, and Amiga programmers generally understand the format better anyway.

Thankyou. I did see that and didn't want to spend 35 quid on something I hadn't tried. Didn't realise it was shareware. Really impressed with the colour reduction performance from 256 down to 16 colours which seems far better than Photoshop's. Will certainly consider paying them if I continue to use it.

Edit - Actually, I take that back. I was basing my opinion on what the preview was showing me. Once I actually clicked OK, the image totally fell to bits.

There are also Python bindings for RECOIL (Retro Computer Image Library) and a Web page that displays pictures in file formats native to retro computers

RECOIL - Web

RECOIL for android is also great to have on your phone for viewing original iff/ilbm images (it can convert them to pngs too, if you want)…

There is also Mark Riale's brilliant PyDPainter (works on Mac), Steffest's web based DPaint.js, Tero Heikkinen's Multipaint 2024 (works on Mac), GrafX2 (version 2.8 which works on Mac), and Werner Randelshofer's MultiShow (yes you can get it to run on Mac, just need an old version of Java installed)

So there's a few options for iff/ilbm's out there.

Although ImageMagick doesn't seem to do the trick anymore?

For color reductions i remember debabelizer - despite being commercial - being incredibly powerul in generating superpalettes - or optimal palettes from a number of pictures and a given final amount of colors

And might I suggest my own tool: https://www.stef.be/dpaint/ ?
Build to handle IFF files and Amiga icons, next to modern image formats.

Brower based so works on every modern platform with nothing to install, free and open source.
(and loads the somewhat malformed 24-bit IFF file in this thread without complaining)

I seem to remember that even either ImageFX or ADPro were able to generate superpalettes, i think it was imageFX
