Worms: The Director's Cut no longer functioning under WinUAE [2.3.0]

I actually noticed this problem after updating to 2.2.0 a few weeks ago, and had to downgrade back to 2.0.1 to get it working again. I recently upgraded to 2.3.0 and WormsDC still doesn't work.

The game displays the Team17 and Ocean logos, and then the main WormsDC title screen. It should then dim and display the "Loading!" message. Instead it hangs. The Amiga hasn't crashed and the game hasn't frozen, it simply refuses to proceed past this point.

This used to happen a long time ago in an older build, but only if sound was disabled. I know Andy Davidson did some funky things with the Amiga hardware and he tied elements in the game into some very weird places (alas, I am not technically minded enough to be able to explain what he did or how he's done it), and the game has never really emulated properly. Now it won't run at all.

Is anyone else bale to get this game running in the current build of WinUAE?

This one seems to be really timing sensitive because it has worked and then later stopped working and working again since ages ago

Indeed. I've considered asking Andy if he can give any further insight into how the game ties itself into the system, but he's very keen on keeping WormsDC on actual real actual Amigas... which is a bit of a shame, but I admire his something-or-other.

Just tested on 2.3 and it seems to work fine (A1200 most compatible quickstart) ADF version [Worms - The Director's Cut (1998)(Team 17)(AGA)]

ADF and IPFs both work fine here. (CE and non-CE modes tested)

Title screen appears, loads some more and finally asks for disk 3.

But sometimes it asks to press blue or right mouse button before it asks for disk 3.. Perhaps it detects CD32 pad for some reason.. Need to investigate this more.

EDIT: both ipf and tosec adf version asks for blue or right mouse, "patched" does not. I guess they are working as designed

Yep, that's intentional.

Odd that I can't get it to run, though. I'm using an HD-installed copy. I'll try the IPFs.

Try booting the game up with no startup-sequence, there was a bug in the original Worms release that if it detected CD.DEVICE, the game would look for CD music tracks and the game wouldn't progress any further, it might be along the same lines.

Or temporarily rename CD.DEVICE as something else so Worms DC can't find it.

I also find it a bit laughable that Andy Davidson is credited with any kind of programming skill on the Amiga, because he really didn't, he just developed a great idea into a good game using Blitz Basic.

HD installed: totally different environment than bootable disks.

I don't usually care about HD installed games because there is too many "random" variables.. (HD type, OS setup, startup-sequence, different memory usage)

WormsDC doesn't experience the CD.DEVICE issue, AFAIK. It will ask you "PRESS RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON OR BLUE" but the controller issue only occurs in the original Worms (although it can be fixed by using WormsShell).

I can confirm it hangs while loading with WUAE 2.3.0...

EDIT: using "CPU NOCACHE" the game loads as expected...

"Not working" is not a bug report.

Still working fine here using normal quickstart configuration.

EDIT: Surprising lack of useful information in these so called bug reports. No one said anything about HD installed version or using too fast cpu modes with games that are not made for fast CPUs.

Case closed, not a bug.

EDIT2: I can take quick look if you attach statefile, created when it is frozen

WormsDC 1.05 (fully patched version from T17 website).
WUAE 2.3.0 with 060, fastest possible, JIT 8MB, FPU support, FPU more compatible, direct JIT, warned by WUAE the state file is unreliable with my cfg

Attached anyway, if can help: http://jump.fm/OFMWS

It must be a too fast CPU emu as you suggested because if I slow down emu in many different ways the game always loads fine. Even when doing nothing 1/5 it loads fine...
