Installing a HD into an A600

Hi all,

I have an A600 which works fine. I bought a blank 810 MB hard drive on ebay the other day to put in said Amiga.

I have put the HD in the Amiga and when I boot using the HD Install disk, I get to the desktop but the HD icon isn't present.

I have tried to use the "Install HD" utility and it says there are no drives connected. When I try to do a low-level format of the drive it says that the program couldn't find any HD's connected to the computer.

When I boot the machine with no disks in the floppy drives, the HD spins and goes to the insert disk screen, so I know there is power to the drive.

The 44 pin ribbon connector is connected to the drive and the pins on the motherboard, and there are two jumpers on the other four pins of the drive, linking the top and bottom pins together.

The drive was bought as tested and working so I can't understand why it doesn't work. Anyone got any ideas ?

Thanks to all offer help.

Most possibly its a jumper problem.
Find docs for the harddrive on the net about what the jumpers do in different positions, and try them in other positions.

Floppy disk That f***ing HD again

Right, what am I doing wrong ? !!

I've now managed to get the drive to work thanks to cv634d and have run through the install process. All the files go onto the HD and seem to be ok. When I reboot the computer, it won't boot from the hd. I put in a floppy and boot to WB that way and the drive isn't on the desktop. If i then go into HDTools and view the partition info ( making no changes ) then quit, the drives mysteriously appear.

Then when I reset the amiga, it wont boot from the HD and the cycle starts again.

What obvious little step have I missed to cause this rather annoying problem ?

As always, any help is appreciated.

i was told to cut the red wire on the ribbon. I did this and the amiga lost the hard drive totally, so i have soldered it back together. Anyone got any more suggestions ?

Yeah dont cut shite.

Probably it's a problem with the RDB, try entering HDToolbox, and checking the drive's boot priority. Set it to something like 0 or 1 .
SAVE changes, reboot, and see what happens.

Got it. By default it was set to 1. Changed it to 0 and the drive now works.

Thx all

It must have been interferring with the CC0: device, which I think is 1!

Glad it worked

Hey! This might be a dumb question, but....

What exactly is CC0: device?

Cc0: is the PCMCIA device. If you format a PCMCIA Memory card as a disk instead as if it was fastmem, you can boot from it.
