I considered doing it but there literally is no game to play, just aimless wandering

Phil, what happened to this?
Atari ST conversion: Super Stario Land
Are you still planning on finishing / releasing at some stage?

Send a message via ICQ to SquawkBox
The Games ~ Winter Edition looks better (obvious for some events e.q. Cross Country or Slalom, less obvious for others) and plays smoother on the ST.

@Zandig: I love Phantasie, ST or any other version, and as it has already been explained my remark wasn't aimed at your comment but one which has been deleted.

@Galahad: I do recall you mentioning possibility of a Sundog port before, any hope?

Time for me to eat more humble pie!

With all my arrogance yesterday, balking at the whole idea that an Amiga game could be "worse" than its ST counterpart, I then saw this video.

[ Show youtube player ]

I guess I forgot that the ST could do 3D slightly faster than the Amiga, which is ironic, considering that the main games I played on my 520STFM back in 1990 were 3D games (Carrier Command, Damocles).

And to cap it all off, the narrator keeps commenting on the Amiga zealots calling it a conspiracy on the part of ST cultists. I guess we do think possibly too much of our favourite platform, don't we?

Every system has its advantages and disadvantages.

In all honesty, the ST is not a bad system, but the only thing that I think lets it down badly is the choice of sound chip, which is basic at best. I happily played the ST games for the visuals, but I never liked the music, except for the sampled stuff and mods, even if it sounded very hissy.

Atari ST sounds, a part some rare games, it is very horrible. Nice video that show some games on Atari ST better than Amiga mainly in the graphics.
In the past i tried to make a special in my fanzine in something similar about Amiga vs Atari St in Games, but i didn't find nothing of interesting. Of course some difference are very difficult to find while you play and some are not so very important in gameplay. Interesting video.

I came from the Amstrad CPC to the Amiga so in my 8 bit days was always jealous of the C64s hardware scrolling, sprites and SID.
I only played the ST once(after owning my Amiga) , the game was Space Harrier( not sure if 1 or 2) but i thought it was meh and having the same sound chip as the CPC was really disappointed.
I loved the look of it however and do have an appreciation for the ST now.

I don't know anything about ST, but since they use 320x200 they are still in NTSC? or do they also use PAL? If they are only in NTSC, it would be necessary to compare only by setting the amiga in NTSC.

The ST had physical and design issues too, and I remember the keyboard being very squidgy to the feel compared to my later A500. Then there was the sound the floppy drive made when it started spinning, like a "SQUIDGE" sound. And the worst part was a major bug in the OS where, if you had a joystick connected and you held down the fire button upon booting, the entire system would lock up. I discovered this myself and I tried to return the ST to the shop I bought it from, when they said it was no issue. Turns out even leaving a joystick on AUTOFIRE was enough to SOMETIMES trigger the lock up!!

What bad design, eh?

Yeah that too

...but motivation means that I donated £200 per game to meynaf for his efforts

Really it's not much when you think of the skills required to actually undertake this i.e. knowing / understanding how the Amiga & Atari ST operate at a high level, and being able to analyse / code both; plus the time that he invested making it reality

Feel free to PM me if you want more details (although you can guess a bit by reading the thread), as we would like the thread to move further and back on topic.

No worries and thanks for the explanation

Indeed it's different, technically speaking i know nothing about the differences

Anyway in general i like the sound output of computers, also from 8 bit era
