Meesterbrein (Dutch version)
To all you Dutch guys here:
does this exist? I took the screenshots for the HOL entry and found both the loading and title screens completely in Dutch, but all other texts in English. Were the texts really in Dutch or did Legend/Punishers translate the game? My assumptions are referring to the the latter case, because Punishers (vaguely) state this in their intro. |

Yes, I DO know, because the term 'geheugen' is widely used in Dutch language for 'RAM' ( ~ memory).

"Meesterbrein: Een Geheugenspel Voor Alle Leeftijden" means "Masterbrain: a memorygame for all ages". Dunno if it is translated... same as the Fruitmania thing... most credits are in dutch but the rest of the game is completely in english.

Now, if you say it (and know that game) it might be true.
Well, I had just thought it was translated by the crackers (which wouldn't surprise me at all, because I've seen it many times with French games and the like) |

Here's some info...
This game was written by BBS De Saen/Saen Software. All software from this little Dutch company is rare. They mostly wrote edutainment software for the small Dutch Amiga market. The entry at HOL states it is volume 2 of an education series.
Saen also wrote Casino Games for CDTV and a disk-tutorial for Deluxe Paint IV which was in Dutch. They sometimes advertised their products in Amiga Magazine, a Dutch mag. I cannot remember an advert for Meesterbrein though. |

It's funny to see this (old) thread. I am the programmer who created 'Meesterbrein' for BBS de Saen... So here's the definitive answer :
Meesterbrein was published only in Dutch so any translations out there are modified versions of the original one. BBS de Saen did publish a modified version of Meesterbrein called 'Sexybrein'. A very slightly 'erotic' tinted version of the game. Also Fruitmania (mentioned in another thread) was published only in Dutch. (It probably doesn't matter now anymore, a year after this thread started, but i couldn't resist posting an answer). |

Go on, tell us a bit more about your history then! We're always fond to hear stories about the old days.
I remember hanging an onion on my belt, because that was the fashion back then. |

Whenever I smell something fishy about a "translation", I'm usually right. So my request still stays: let's find the version that is entirely in Dutch and let's replace the current DBS in HOL with the correct version! In other words: the DBS shown in HOL seems to originate from a hack. Quote:
BTW: if you have any games from BBS de Saen / Saen Software not yet in HOL, please tell about some titles! Thanks! Last edited by andreas; 10 March 2005 at 10:14. |

Hallo Andreas, hi LaundroMat...
I should have the original masterdisk of 'meesterbrein' somewhere. A few years ago I decided to conserve every amiga disk/harddisk I owned 'cause I was starting to be afraid of bit-rot in my disks and I didn't want to lose everything from my Amiga period... So i'll see what I can dig up what's missing in the HOL. A bit about my Amiga history: The Amiga was my 3rd computer (after the vic20 and the c64). Already used to programming I started programming it right away, in C at first (utilities), then Assembly for some time (games and educational software) and then back to C again (larger applications). I started freelancing, writing software for BBS de Saen and working at the helpdesk of Commodore, in Amsterdam. I had the most fun developing for BBS de Saen... I worked on FruitMania, Meesterbrein, Sexybrein, Woordcircus and Casino Games (a CDTV title) and a few utilities... Especially the CDTV title was fun. Back then, we had to drive two hours to get to a studio where they had a (1X speed) CD burner ! Burning the CD took ages and costed a fortune... We didn't sleep the night before because the work wasn't finished completely. Guus Hildesheim, the late director of Saen Software, fell asleep underneath the chairs of three developers (including me) working all night long making sure the CD would be finished by dawn... Hard work but fun work ! The Amiga days were fun/pioneering days for me. Never to be forgotten ! |

Wish many so-called "star programmers" would have done this, too! Quote:

A long-time MIA (missing-in-action) game! It is very rare, and you could think of a "good" price on ebay.NL! Quote:
Currently it's set to Saen Software, but that doesn't mean anything, as the entry is more than 2 years old. |

Would you also mind to make an ISO of the CD? I guess those are not so big as you did no FOOKIN KILLA music that eats up > 60% of the CD space? Quote:
about Fruitmania: Are the English button labels original, or were they originally labeled in Dutch too? Last edited by andreas; 11 March 2005 at 10:50. |

Ok, here are the games not yet listed in the HoL :
- Woordcircus - Woordoorlog - Sexybrein - Casinogames - Fruitmania UGA * Woordcircus (Wordcircus) is a game in which you have to guess a partly shown word. Every time you guess the wrong letter, a part of a clowns face is removed. * Woordoorlog (Wordwar) is a typing game. Words are falling out of an airplane, re-type them before they hit your buildings * Sexybrein (Sexybrain) a modified version of Meesterbrein. Sliiiightly erotic * Casinogames. CDTV title, includes modified versions of Fruitmania, a roulette game, a jukebox (to play the music included on the CD) and a third casino game. I don't remember which one. These games are all modified to be playable with the CDTV controller. * Fruitmania UGA - a modified version of Fruitmania, especially for UGA (United Graphic Artists i think). Includes title music which the original fruitmania hasn't. I'll make some screenshots soon and a scan of the CDTV title (although I haven't found it yet). It's not sure that these are all the titles Saen made. I just freelanced for BBS de Saen and don't have all their releases. Unfortunately the director/owner of BBS de Saen died a few years ago so I can't ask anymore... |

Thanks much!
This is what I meant! *DUTCH* texts in the ingame screen! (were English) Could you upload the original Dutch version, please? Maybe it can be made public so that people do not have to download this ugly hack anymore. (Upload a file: go to Group Permissions in your User Control panel and add yourself as a 'zone member'.) |
