WHDLoad: rom.key required? Really???

I am trying to run a WHDLoad game and got this message:

DOS-Error #205
(object not found)
on reading "devs:kickstarts/rom.key"

Since when does WHDLoad ever need the rom.key file?

Are you using kickstarts ripped from Amiga forever?

Since it supports Cloanto AF ROM images as Kickstart files...

If you have Amiga Forever it doesn't exactly take a genius to extract the unkeyed rom files.

Iirc some games only work on registered whdload. The slave coders make the decision.

Yes, you need the rom.key file in DEVS:Kickstarts if and only if you use renamed Kickstart ROMs from Cloantos Amiga Forever package. The ROMs there are encrypted and need the rom.key file to decrypt them. If WHDLoad still complain, better get real Kickstart ROM files and you will also get a huge benefit to pay for a personalized keyfile for WHDLoad itself.

It all exists in the docs of WHDLoad...:

Quote:
Starting WHDLoad version 16.5 also the kickstart images from the Cloanto Amiga Forever CDs may be used. The images must be renamed according the table below. Additionally the rom.key must be copied to Devs:Kickstarts/ or WHDCOMMON:. Some older installs require a kick40068.A1200 image these installs won't work with the Cloantos ROMs.
Amiga Forever 2008 also includes the kick40068.A1200 and the images are automatically copied to the right places.
Amiga Forever 2011 also includes the kick33180.A500 and kick40063.A600 roms. These roms require WHDLoad version 17.0 to be supported.

Yes, I am. I never came across this message before, so I was suprised. But then again, I used normal kickstart roms rather than AF ones.
