AmigaOS 4.0 The Final Update available
Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.
Hyperion Entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update. Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility. Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components. A list of new features can be found here (baseline: Update #4). Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007. The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season! Amiga OS 4.0 © 2001-2006 Hyperion Entertainment VOF, developed under license from Amiga, Inc. “Amiga” is a registered trademark of Amiga, Inc. |

It's pretty amazing that they spent years claiming to never release it to classic users because they wanted to release the OS for the "new", "modern", hardware to gain momentum. To do otherwise, would be a financial disaster and borderline idiotic.
Then, on 24 december 2006, they go ahead and do it. Could've, should've released this months ago. Could've, should've released this for classic users, years ago. Never did. Gotta love geniuses. In the meanwhile new users can buy their new Computer with AmigaOS 4.0... nowhere. |

The question is, how long till it's hacked to work on [insert PPC system here]?

Seems like it's worded as meaning no further development for version 4.
And does anyone have any clue as to the list of PPC hardware coming in 07? |

If it were to be hacked, it'd have been a long time ago. At this point the user base hasn't grown by one single costumer, and thus it'd be hard to think the will to hack it would've too. One could theorise someone fed up with the situation would, so it'd run on regular PPCs (themselves, a dying architecture), but honestly, if it were so, shouldn't it have happened by now? No one new will get this OS, and if they were, they'd have no hardware to run it on. The rumour on several Amiga sites is that this got PR Released to serve lawsuit and contractual issues between Amiga Inc. and Hyperion, since it seems that Amiga Inc. has exerciced it's buyback clause of the AmigaOS 4.0 product. It is likely that Hyperion doesn't want it's product bought back after having plunged a reported half a million bucks in it. |

Well, actually Adam Kowalzyk of ACK controls is known to have os4 running under qemu, so it's possible to run on ppc emus on win side, the problem is that the os is no available to the public, only the people who bought an A1.

Don't get me wrong Ultron-- I hate 'new amiga' and agree that OS 4.0 is a waste of time. However I'd like to run it on Pear PC just to say I've used it

Dude, have you tried running Mac OS on PearPC? Is it fast on your comp? I know PearPC requires a pentium 4 at least. |

the way I see it, the only thing that will eventually survive is the x86 platform. because there is TONS AND TONS of cheap hardware for it, available NOW and in reality the platform evolved so much that it has no competitors on it's price range.
sone, ms, nintendo still contnue to support the ppc or whatever architecture, because they need to have control over it, like hyperion does on it's amigaONE... if all where x86 platfomrs they would be hacked, changed, modded and run all kinds of freaky software... |
