Which text web browser for 68000?
This starts at 68020. Has anyone recompiled it for 68000?
Is ALynx recommended? Easy and stable installation is preferred. I'm a bit nervous to try this type of program because they are not like unarchivers or text editors. It's mostly to see if it works, not for any real use. 42 MHz 68000, 480kbps connection, 7MB RAM free, WB3.1. |

My 68000 is faster than a 68EC020, so what's the conclusion? Mine is that devs missed a checkbox and recompile. |

Aweb seems to be available as a 68000-version (not a text browser but might still be worth a try).

the conclusion is that for internet you will need a 020 accel because 99% of the programs wants a 020+ anyways u can try aweb 00, or even amosaic 00 but they are so old and buggy that I don't know if will be usable for something a fast 68000 for dapaint and old A500 programs and games > in those things you have to use it |

btw, most of the web sites today are encrypted with SSL so even to read text u need to install a current AMISSL package which is 020+ , also u need a compatible browser ie Ibrowse 3

AmiGemini works on 68000, but of course not stuff that requires AmiSSL.
Code:
0.8 - 2022-07-20 - Spartan protocol support - Custom theme palette editor - Proxy server removes AmiSSL requirement - Run on 68000 (Spartan/HTTP; Gemini via proxy) … |

Obviously I have all manner of beastly Motorola CPUs in my possession. What this proves is just lazy C coders publishing on Aminet, but forgetting to spend two minutes checking that box. Still looking for a textmode browser for 68000. Was there a good coder or an optimized textmode browser for Amiga? Edit: My question is not really fair is it. At the same time, the 68000 version was a checkbox away for hundreds of coders. So now, users get this problem. From that. Last edited by Photon; 19 July 2024 at 04:48. |

AmiSSL is a bit odd case unfortunately as how the OpenSSL port is done, it depends on 68020 instructions. I asked and got this answer: https://github.com/jens-maus/amissl/issues/59 |

I always say this and have never done anything about it but it would probably be quite easy to create an App that could display a page like EAB perfectly on a 68000 not including user pictures.
Just need an App that can download web pages on 68000 without displaying them - then the Display App would just scan through for relevent text etc. All graphics for the site and emojis etc would be pre made Lowres etc. Anyway ...... |

I'm sure I've used ALynx on a 68000. It's on Aminet. SSL would be painfully slow on a 68000.

I've speculated for a long time this is how it could be done, nice to see someone did it Quote:
ALynx seems to have no installation instructions and no installer, but there are a few lines in the .cfg. Maybe it's not a bad thing to not have a browser change many things in the startup. "Portable" means easier to try out. I'll give it a go at some point. Cheers for answers. |

Cryptographic operations, starting with basic big number algorithms run at least 10x slower on a 68020 if compiled for 68000, for example. They run even slower on a 68000. The 68000 also lacks 32-bit indexed addressing, as required by AmiSSL. There is simply no way to compile AmiSSL for 68000, as additionally GCC lacks support for certain maths operations when compiling for 68000. Also, since 1992, the 68020 started to become an acceptable minimum requirement for software that would physically not be feasible to run on a stock A500/600. Most people bought accelerators for those systems and of course the A1200 had a 68020. |
