A1200 030/40mhz faster than A2000 030 50mhz?
Just curious. I ahve a 40mhz accelerator in my A1200 and under all benchbarks (Sysinfo and AIBB) it is faster than aGVP 030 50mhz that is on my A2000?
In sysinfo it shows as 8.x MIPS vs the GVP at 7.8 MIPS as in comparison to the A600 (all I acn rememebr now) shows 14.x for the 40mhz and 13.8 for the 50mhz Any thoughts thanks |

The A2000 has 16-bit Chip RAM and the A1200 has 32-bit but CPU benchmarks shouldn't use Chip RAM.
Have you checked that both have caches switched on? Could the RAM controller on the A1200 accelerator be zero-wait-state and the one on the A2000 have wait-states? |

Both have caches on, the A2000 one uses GVP ram the other uses standard ram

One is running in PAL and the other is in NTSC. Sysinfo's timing loops are tied to the screen's refresh rate to an extent, so they are not comparable unless you use the same screen mode.

How come dburst is switched off on both?

The speed heavily depends on the RAM architecture and how it interfaces with the CPU and with the Amiga chipset.
Apollo accelerators seems faster than Blizzard ones on the A1200 for that exact reason. But Apollo units are less stable than Blizzards. |

I reran the 50mhz with PAL, no chnage. I also tried witll alla cahes (I guess what is in the pictures is the default)

Erm, you were supposed to re-run the 50MHz one in NTSC weren't you? You already ran it in PAL first time round.
DBURST on should make a big difference if the benchmark and the RAM controller support it. |

Actaully no, the 40mhz one was in PAL and the 50mhz in NTSC so I reran the 50mhz in PAL. Now both are in PAL
I will try the burst tonight |

It has to be the memory controller then. Perhaps there are some jumpers on the board?
What position is jumper J12 in? Open or closed? |

JP12 was open, if I close I get a minor boost but then 8mb of fast ram gets mapped as ZorroII ram
What is the normal speed of an 030 50mhz? Maybe the 40mhz one is too fast? BTW, DBURST On has no effect on speed |

@desantii
rough 030 speeds on an A1200 (SYSINFO) (non-GVP / based on 72Pin Memory Controllers) 28Mhz = 5.8 MIPS (M-Tec 1230 Viper) 33MHz = 6.4 MIPS (Apollo 030Mk3) 40Mhz = 7.9 MIPS (Apollo 030Mk3) 50Mhz = 9.1 MIPS (Blizzard Mk4) Now, (rough from memory) 8MB Fast Upgrades (Again SYSINFO) 2.5 MIPS = Hawk 8MB Board(s) (lots of rebadged cards use this reference board) 2.8 MIPS = E1208 (Elbox)* 2.4 MIPS = DKB1202 2.3 MIPS= PC1204 *very fussy with the memory - impressive though the E1208 was I found it at times a little unstable with known good ram, although its really one of those cards that - once you found the memory that makes it happy, leave it with it!!!! MIPS only tell half the story with Amiga accelerators, perhaps the next biggest thing for the Amiga is FAST to CHIP writes and CHIP to FAST writes Last edited by Zetr0; 03 July 2010 at 05:52. |

But on a related note, is a 040 40MHz much faster than 040 25MHz? My Apollo 1240 (XC68040RC40) is underclocked from 40MHz to 25MHz because I have no heatsink, but will I be very happy if I go back to 40MHz and get a heatsink for it? There's literally no room for one, so I need to do some hackery to get a heatsink fitted. Having a heatpad + copper pipe leading to a big heatsink where the floppy drive used to be, has always been a dream I have at nights. |

Yes! Imagine 040 40MHz 100% stable, it's a dream to me. (I have 2x 060 CPUs but none of them works in my Apollo 1240, not even the other MC68040RC33 I have work).... Only this old XC68040RC40 oven works, but it freeze all the time because of no heatsink.

Please explain. We talking about a DMA to / from Chip RAM to Zorro II Fast RAM? Lots (the majority?) of accelerators don't have such capability. Or are we talking about copies between FAST & CHIP RAM using the CPU?
