Super League 2021: Round 1 - Super Hang-On

Super Hang-On [lemon] [hol]
We are kicking off with an oldie from 1988. A conversion of Sega's popular 1987 arcade racer. Originally there was no plan for an Amiga port. Coder Zareh Z.K. Johannes, who worked on the Atari, Spectrum and Amstrad versions, took it upon himself to make one to improve his 68k skills. It was impressive enough to convince the studio at Electric Dreams/Activision UK to commission a full version with improved graphics and sound. Turning out to be a great coin-op conversion of it's day for a platform increasing in popularity.

A super start for the Super League. Let the racing begin!

Round Ends: 23:59 (UK Time) on Saturday 30th January 2021

Ah now we've played this a couple of times in the past! Looks like I'll have to break it out again. Might do a live score attempt on Twitch at some point

Well, if you're plotting world domination, you pick a very innocuous starting point

Actually only started last week so very much new to it. I'm very much a 'low budget' streamer - I don't have the tech or the resources to do massively high-quality stuff (I have to turn my webcam off (probably a blessing) and stream at 30fps to get a steady frame rate) but it's good fun anyway. I'll look at having a crack at it live maybe Wednesday or Thursday this week... but I'll brush up on my 'skills' on my 1200 first...

Lots of the best stuff on Twitch is chill people making what they have work for them. I hang out in a few low key spots on there.

A quick few tries from me. Gotta learn fudging Birdland! It's only up from here, ha.

BTW: I play by mouse. You have to adjust the sensitivity to be successful.

This one's new to me. I'd benefit a lot from a minimap but I guess learning the track is part of the game.

The physics at low speed seem a bit weird. It feels like the bike should turn more tightly if you've come off the track and lost a lot of speed.

I could really do with a navigator calling out the turns. Add a sidecar.

Not sure if the turning is affected by which side of the track you are on at low speeds. Seems to affect it normally.

I'm gonna have a crack at this game at about 8.30pm (UK time) over on Twitch if anyone wants to point and laugh at me. I don't know if live broadcasting of competition entries has been done too often

Aw, missed it, Graham. But I checked the vod. Looked like a good night of racing games. You were close to beating Africa. Just got to make that last section, it's not as hard as the middle sections.

And *puts on nerd hat* I think you are only the third to broadcast comp scores. Robo-Sparkle and AmigaBill being the others. IIRC. Would be cool to see it more regularly.

Not my the greatest score but it's taken a while to get back into this. Gotta learn that track and I came off once too.

*phew*, that was a tough course! The opening five corners are rough. Lots of slow bends in the later green and desert stages.

I'm making better use of the brakes to enter corners faster now. I'm still confused by the way road grip feels better on the inside of a turn than on the outside. It's rewarding when you nail a corner but I often have to take the outside to pass the AI.

Finally managed to complete the beginner course. I'm using a joypad and up to accelerate is killing my thumb. I'll have to find a better controller for the other courses.

I tried using the mouse and even though I feel like I have more control, my results are much worse.

If I remember right the Rys Mk II USB adapter has a mode where one of the joypad buttons is mapped to joystick up.

Good shout! I have one plugged into my other Amiga and I'd forgotten about that mode.

I think a completion of this one is beyond my ability. On to the last map!

I'm not sure I'll have too much time to practice the other courses so I'll start getting some times in as and when. Using the Rys MkII with a USB wireless Saturn pad is a much more comfortable experience!
