What does High score or Trainer mean?

Probably the most naive question of the year coming up. In many cracked games it gives you a choice between [H]ighscore or [T]rainer. But it doesn't actually say what those do. I couldn't find anything on Google. So what are they exactly?

My guess is if you use the [T]rainer then [H]ighscore won't be saved back to media.

...and if you select [H]ighscore then obviously you are not using the [T]rainer so these will be saved back.

WHDLoad slaves seem to do this quite often

Similar to a cheat. You can select unlimited Lives, time, weapons etc. in a small menu before the game starts. If you press "H" for highscore the trainer menu is bypassed directly and the game starts without.

I figure it means that it helps you to train on the game and learn how to play it without risk, by means of cheats, until you master it and can play it without one.

I always thought of it coming from "trainer wheels".
In any case, it kind of spoils the game, so I would rename it
