Quake 2 WOS performance

Hello fellow Amiga users.

Having seen and tried the 68k port of Quake 2 on my 50Mhz '060, I decided that I'd probably do better with the WarpOS port instead (since I have a 240Mhz 603e).
First problem was that Hyperion no longer have an game files hosted on their webpage - all gone.

Amazingly, I found version 3.9 on Fileplanet of all places: https://www.fileplanet.com/archive/p...-Quake-II-v3-9

After creating the correct assigns, and ensuring that the "quake2" file was in the right place (actually resides inside the baseq2 drawer oddly enough), the game runs.
However, performance is awful, probably not helped by me unable to set a videomode for the game. It appears to run at 1280x1024, giving me 7fps on timedemo. And keyboard entry in the console is like wading through treacle.

Accessing the video menu freezes the entire system. Are the parameters in the executable to force videomode? Or some optimised settings for the config file?
Thanks for any assistance.

Hi, recommend using a lower resolution such as 640x480 as it will improve performance however I think even on my 330mhz BPPC with Mediator/Voodoo 3 Timedemo is <15fps. What is your full system spec? I recall it ran faster on the A4000 and also Grex PCI boards.

I have some videos on my YouTube channel:

Here I even found one that was from my old 240mhz BPPC [ Show youtube player ]

Here you go the A4000 was massively faster due to the memory bandwidth I believe abd the Z3 bus:

Unfortunately, that's where I'm have issues. As I said, accessing the video menu freezes the entire system, so I can't physically change it!

Running on the following:
Amiga 1200
BlizzardPPC 68060/50Mhz & 603e/240Mhz
256MB Fast RAM
Mediator PCI
Voodoo3 3000

You might want to try the great Cowcat's Quake2 build, which he occasionally works on still. There are benchmarks and config files and later builds on the last page in this thread:

The Freezing might be that you don't have the screen modes setup in Picasso96, make sure you have 640x480x16/800x600x16 you can even try 512x384x16 if you have a smaller screen still looks good

That's how I used to play Quake 2 back on my P1 200mmx / Voodoo 2 back in the day! It looked amazing on my Sony CRT lol.

Thanks for the help, chaps!

Now have it running nice and fast at 17.3fps at 640x480.

I'll have a read-through the Q2 Workshop post, and see if any further tweaks can be made to enhance this further.
