DF1 does not read correctly

Hello,

I just got two internal df0/df1 coded 880K floppy drives.
I connected them in a bus chain to the intenal floppy connector of Amiga1200. The system recognizes DF0 and DF1 (cable is straight through). DF0 even boots. But DF1 cannot read disks even if DF0 can do with same disk. DF1 always says "disk unreadable". Formatting disks in DF1 breakes with "cylinder 0 not found". The disks are OK.

The drives are brand new and fresh unpacked.

What could be wrong???

Thanks in advance

You tried swapping them round to make sure it's not the drive?

Try This:-

1) Connect each drive by itself & see if each works. If not one is defective.
2) Swap drives on cable (As suggested previously)
3) Check to see if there is a jumper on the circuit board for DF0 & DF1
(I seem to recall an old external drive having one so it could
be used as an internal drive-DF0)
I didn't think you could use one cable for both floppies (?)
I just used the external drive (and connector on back of A1200)
removed the case & made it fit :^)

Only the Big Box Amigas support 2 internal floppies.

What you are trying to do isn't possible with an A1200. However, I know there was a device made by MicroniK that allowed to have two internal diskdrives installed on the internal floppy connector of the A1200, but can't find a picture of it right now...

1) get a plcc socket that fits over the cia chip
2) wire the needed signals for second drive from the plcc socket to your internal floppy cable
3) build a ready-signal-pulsing circuit (check aminet's "add external drive" hacks) if your drive is not automatically detected

- you can omit the socket and solder the extra wires directly to the a1200's motherboard if you want to make the change permanent.
- on amigas, the drive led is important, thus you need to twist the drive led wires around in the cable between connectors for df0 and df1
- the drive selects don't need to be twisted, just jumper df0 to DS0 and df1 to DS1 (and make sure you use the right connector, after the twist is df1)
- I might update this later. :-)

I actually do not believe that two internal floppies are not possible. I checked out this "AddDF2+3" on Aminet (thanks Jope ). It is nearly that what I'm looking for. I found similar boards in external drives.
But it actually confuses me more . Exchanging wire 10 and 12 makes it possible to connect floppy0 and floppy1 with the same cable to shugart bus. This is somehow not possible so easy in Amiga. Even if drive-sel0 and drive-sel1 as well as motor-on0 and motor-on1 is available on the internal Amiga connector.
It would be helpful to get some circuit schematics for internal and external floppy implemenation (need to know if CN5 provides the same signals like CN11).
I think "AddDF2+3" is the right direction but I need df0+df1 and not df0+df2 ... like in aminet. The change should be smal (I will start with some reverse engineering of that external drive PCBs).

Measure whether the DS and motor and LED signals really go from the CIA's pins to the floppy connector, if you don't believe us.

They are only present in A2000/A3000/A4000 machines.

You need to provide them yourself if you intend to connect several internal drives to the A1200.

http://www.mguc.republika.pl/ then click FDD2Int in the right frame. It's in Polish but there are some schematics that should make things clear.

You could always contact Marian(author of the site and the interface), he's a MorphOS developer and I think he knows enough English to help you out.

Wait a sec! It's tells you how to connect two internal pc floppy drives so the amiga recognises them as DF0 and DF1 so it's not exacly what your looking for but still...

BarrySWE, please tell e more about your adapter.
I curretly still trying to set up "AddDF2+3" from Aminet reccomended by Jope. But I'm not sure whether I really know what I'm doing.

May seem a silly answer but is the disc drive switched on at the back?

The drives have a soldered zero Ohm restistor as jumper for drive selection. df0 and df1 has been set in the drives already by the supplier.
