Is This Hard Drive "US"

hi people
i have been sent a 4 yr old WD80gig hd as a poss replacement
that had os3.5 working before with sfs (now wiped clean)

i use a 1200 in a power tower with a fastata111
os3.1 to os3.5
i have followed the instructions to the letter on installing a hd larger than 4gig .

some times the ata3,driver see`s the hd sometimes not?
having eventualy got it reconised , all partions are devided into logical units of 4gig, read and partioned the first 2 units to just under the 2gig size x 2 on each unit,
as i dont want to use all the drive,
reboot reqd, and following the instructions as per the manual,

quick format DH0 ?icon. install os3.1, reboot fine,
try to install the fastata111 software,
and up come a checksum error on xxxxxxx ata complains it cannot find the c:installer even though i have put it in there, ver 43.3
reboot nothing DH0 has vanished,
in fact no hd at all , not even in the ess menu ?

if i put the install disc in & bootup theres DH0,
remove disc, reboot, its gone ??
i have tried every sequence and combination i can think of
does this sound like the hd is f%$Ked

EDIT, forgot to add, if i try to manualy install the ata software and click on C: or prefs drawer
the contents of workbench (DH0)vanish, ? left with a gray empty draw
i have googled and searched all amiga sites for a definitive answer

Hows your Power ?

Not that I know much about Amiga stuff, but I've had drives do all sort of weird shait (including disappearing) and the power supply was playing funny buggers.

as the this hd is beyond recovery not even my pc can see it
