Simon CD32 on A1200

Hi Guys,

I have managed to make a floppy disk that will boot a Simon the sorceror CD32 iso image.

I have managed to get Music, sound and talking working fine. The one thing I can't get working is the saving. I know this would be the CD32's backup ram normally. Is this just a case of using an assign for this?

I cant quite remeber but it is very simple the default path is something like - sys:/prefs/env-archive and probably need nonvolatile library maybe someone can remember or ill try and look it up.

this may help:
Quote:

A: The game tries to use nonvolatile.library to save to the CD32's NVRAM.
Make sure that this can be accessed in LIBS: and you create a file
called "ENVARC:sys/nv_location" - a single line of text that is the
directory name of where you would like saved data to be stored.
direct link to this cd32 faq does not work.
hmm, a SHIFT+reload of the website fixed it, but if not:
try faberp.tripod.com - search for CD32 link, next page use link "Amiga CD32 FAQ Part Two".

Unfortunately I can't get the save game to work so it's pretty useless. I can post it if you don't mind playing the game in a single run.

I guess ENVARC: was hard coded in the CD32 as there is no assign for it on the CD's startup-sequence. I guess non-volatile.library was in rom too. I have tried putting non-volatile library in df0:libs and have assigned that folder to libs: before starting the CD but it still won't work.

I have also assigned ENVARC: to df0: and then created the file df0:sys/nv_location and put a line in it saying "df0:saves"

Has anyone got any ideas?

Ok I have got saving and loading working.

Find the adf file simcd32.adf in the zone.

edit the follwing line if df0:s/startup-sequence to point to the location of your simon.iso on one of your hardisks.

Code:
run >nil: sys:SimCD32/SimCD32 dh1:iso/simon.iso
Saved games will be saved on the floppy disk in a folder called saves.

thanks for posting your solution.
someone should have mentioned that earlier: for example IdeFix and AsimCDFS comes
also with some sort of CD32 emulators. they can be found on the ftp.

Thanks a lot!

I'll have a look at the floppy to see how you solved the problem.

Wow. That's brilliant. Thanks to you I've finally got Simon's CD32 up and running on my 030/50 1200.

The intro was a tiny bit slow, and the speech very occasionally glitchy, but everything ingame seems good. Speed is fine and saving to floppy works a treat.

I wonder if this method would work for other CD32 games?

It should work for some other games. Although I don't think CD audio will work so you might aswell just use WHDLoad. AFAIK there is no WHDload for Simon and it doesn't use CD audio, thats why I went to the trouble of creating this boot disk.

Yes it works,Like you seid audio don't work but you can't use Iso and wav anyway but you can use the iso for the games, I have isos on my A1200,did it a long time a go,i have the CD200 on mine as a iso, just couldn't get the save to work on Simon(Thanks for getting it working),I started to use the Amiga CD32 emulator, you can save with that.I am talking about the emulator on the Amiga(its a program with a menu).oh as well had to changed the files system, its was playing the animation on Simon like its was shuddering and speech was stopping for a few seconds,so could use the one that comes with HDtoolbox.I think I used PFS.

Oh and mine boot from the HD and I don't need to use the floppy,I use Amiga Boot Selector to boot the iso games like Simon,Microcosm and Beneath a Steel Sky.the games with audio I use my CD32 thats next to my A600 and A1200,yep all on one desk..

I found it in the zone, in 2017 folder. Works for simon, all right.
I will investigate how it behaves with other games and maybe find a way to run more of them the same way.
