DotC is a good choice. But Amiga games are very much about 2D and soft scrolling which is why as the one defining Amiga game I would choose Lionheart. And Agony.

Shadow of the Beast. If I had to limit it to one game.

This seems to be a dominant opinion on this board, but I've always found this angle somewhat odd. For me Amiga was always a quintessential (micro) computer, and I was into computer-style games first and foremost.
For that reason I'd always pick one from the likes of Monkey Island, Populous, Lemmings, Cannon Fodder, EotB 2 ahead of a console style videogame (even though I like them a lot too of course). Only one pick is super tough, in the end it'd have to be an epic battle between It Came From The Desert (though DotC made me buy Amiga) and Another World, with the 1st place going to the latter, mainly because of its Amiga DNA. This game has it all: is unique, groundbreaking, stunning, and clever. |

Lionheart
To my big surprise no a lot of votes for Gods!, which would be also cool, but was available on other 16 bit consoles, while Lionheart is just on Amiga and shows its capabilities. |

Amiga OCS/ECS in general for me is Shadow of the Beast, the first game that actually uses the custom chips properly AND has talented artists and musician as well as coders on the dev team.
Amiga 1000 specific for me would be Marble Madness, based on interviews with the coder it is essentially emulating the arcade, no small task given the support/tools C= had for A1000 devs. |

Lemmings comes to mind for me. An innovative, original, characterful game, making use of Amiga hardware with the music, released in the heyday (arguably the three-year peak period started around the time it was released) and probably bundled with more Amigas than anything else. It may have been released for everything else, but for me its quintessentially Amiga, though maybe that reflects the time I discovered the machine?
On the technical side you'd be talking Defender of the Crown (which is also unquestionably innovative as a game style), Turrican 2 or Shadow of the Beast. For me the one single game to define the Amiga probably ought to be an Amiga original, or at least something whose first home version was for the Amiga, which rules out Monkey Island, Eye of the Beholder and perhaps Rainbow Islands (though all great games, maybe all more played on Amigas than on anything else). How about Alien Breed as a wild card, for exploiting a 1Mb Amiga when most action games were still designed with the ST in mind. Or, to slightly contradict myself as it was an Amiga/ST joint, maybe Populous as it invented a new style of game? |
