Plasmas

Does anyone know of a good explanation of what plasma routines are?
I have just assembled and got to run (something of a rarity!) the plasma source code from the Source4 (thanks Laundromat!).
It looks great but I would like to read the theory behind it before I attempt to understand how it's done.

You can found samples on Programmers Heaven web site, some are with explanation (tutorial).

Thumbs down PC Plasma sucks!

I just looked at some of the examples on that website and PC plasma is exactly how I imagined it would be - incredibly wasteful and CPU/graphics card intensive.

On the Amiga you can plot the sine waves to an oversized screen then move the screen around while colour cycling the picture. This takes (practically) no CPU time at all. I have a few demos in Amos which show the process and they run at full speed on a basic A500.

On the PC you have to plot each pixel for each frame with the altered colour - how typically inefficient and lame!

It doesn't have to be done like that. It's perfectly possible to use an oversized screen + colour cycling on PC, it's just that most PC coders are crap and lazy.

I remember a nice effect (not very plasma but similar), simply draw concentric circle en each bitplane and move each bitplane separately (just move the bitplane address).
