Giana II: Arther and Martha in Future World
The canon page for this project: http://earok.net/game/giana-ii-future-world
Hi all, I've whipped up a basic hack of "Hard N Heavy" to reskin it as "Giana II: Arther and Martha in Future World" (the original title - more history at http://www.c64-wiki.com/index.php/Hard'n'Heavy#Trivia). There's some footage of the hack at [ Show youtube player ] The hack can be downloaded from here - http://earok.net/games/giana2/disk.1 (It's a hack of the WHDLoad disk image, so you'll need the Hard N Heavy WHDLoad slave to play it). I know I'm a terrible artist so I'm definitely keen for better replacement artwork if anyone wants to offer any! Edit: Crashdisk did two ADF images (both based on the Quartex Crack and Galahad's AGA Fix, one with Crest's trainer), they can be downloaded here: http://earok.net/games/giana2/Hard '...1;h Earok].zip http://earok.net/games/giana2/Hard '...+11 Crest].zip Also Cobe made a CD32 ISO that bundles this hack with Giana I, as well as a cover and CD print for the game. https://www.dropbox.com/s/77uhkmb84m...Giana1%262.iso https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cankm1rep...99GbOw5R-2asza Title Screen: (edit: Thanks to Steve for some title screen tweaks) Player Sprite: "Giana" status bar text "Maria" status bar text Demo static status bar Player selection screen icon Player selection screen icon mask Last edited by earok; 21 October 2016 at 07:57. |

What's wrong with the artwork? I think it looks awesome!

Cheers, I appreciate it - well the title screen is bit of a rough mishmash of the original title screen and Giana II's box art (doesn't quite fit with the rest of the scene since the girl is pasted in there from a scan rather than being drawn in a pixel art style), also I just used the Giana 1 sprites more or less directly (excluding palette adjustments) rather than attempting to improve on them in any way. I'm mostly happy with the new text other than the N and the R being slightly dodgy.

Looks better than the original. But still, boring and repetitive game.

@Kitty thanks for posting about it on your site!
@Crashdisk I had a quick try of the ADF, works great thanks. Do you mind if I host a copy of that on my own domain? Also I was curious as to how you applied the hack on to the cracked ADF. |

Good effort all involved, but the nit-picking pedant in me is moved to express the following, tedious point of view:
Dear EAB, Why-oh-why is a game that was clearly intended to feature characters named Arthur* and Martha, now sporting the protagonists of its controversial prequel? The "lady" depicted in the aborted artwork exhibited here, bears absolutely NO resemblance whatsoever to either Giana or Maria, so one can only assume we're looking at a likeness of the fabled "Martha". But what of Arthur*? In any case, I fear Barbarians at the gate! Yours, Disgusted, T. Wells *All contemporary references to the aforementioned within the esteemed organs of the day, rightly refer to "Arthur" (the correct spelling), presumably a nod towards the well-known phrase, "one doesn't know whether one's Arthur or Martha" (see below). One can only splutter indignantly at what evil was at play to allow the "U" to be inexplicably replaced by an "E". (Shudder.) But yeah, good effort all involved. http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...%20or%20Martha Last edited by Mark Wright; 15 August 2014 at 04:10. Reason: Pedantic pedantry |

Updated the original post to include Crashdisk's Quartex/Galahad/Crest ADFs and Cobe's CD32 conversion.
@booboo thanks, I appreciate it @markwright Excellent questions! Here's my explanation - The "e" in "Arther" appears in the C64 wiki article (http://www.c64-wiki.com/index.php/Hard'n'Heavy), though admittedly other places, including a different part of that same article, use "u". This is what I get for relying on Wikis - There's only one sprite so we can't implement both a male and female protagonist - Screenshots of the game while it was still Giana II use the name "Giana" in the top left corner (http://www.c64-wiki.com/index.php/Fi...8_88_Bamse.jpg) - Although it's difficult to tell what Giana was meant to look like due to the quality of the photo (I thought maybe she was meant to be wearing some kind of futuristic suit) it's still apparent she was meant to be a blonde. I did actually do a sprite that was meant to resemble the title screen character, but I ended up going for the classic look instead (since the screenshots didn't look like the title character either) |

Disgruntled of T. Wells replies:
"Pah! This is just the sort of unsatisfactory answer one expects from the EAB, taking ages to arrive, and then not addressing a single one of my points! @Mark Wright I see your point. It make sens but it was fun and great way of rewriting history balancing between truth and fiction. One can chose world where he feels more comfortable.
