Amiga 600 Workbench
Hi folks,
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I have looked into it and cannot seem to find an actual answer. I have an A600 and have a copy of WB2.05 on floppy. I have have now got an AmigaKit CF card to replace the knackered HDD. However, I downloaded a copy of WB3.1 from a website (6 floppy one) and used the floppy image to try and boot into WB from floppy. However, it always just gets to an Amiga prompt 1> and not into the GUI. Is this an issue with the image or does the A600 not like WB3.1? cheers Magnus |

I'm assuming your machine has Kickstart 2.05 in it, in which case you can install OS2.05 or preferably OS2.1. You'll need Kickstart 3.1 to use Workbench 3.1.
But the fact that you're getting a blank DOS prompt instead of an error suggests other possible problems: 1. The hard drive is formatted and bootable, but blank 2. The boot priority of the hard drive is set higher than the floppy drive (it should be 1; DF0: is 5) 3. The OS3.1 disk set you downloaded is suspect. Legit copies are plentiful - please support your local Amiga dealer. |

Thanks for the information - will take it all on board. You are absolutely right I am on 2.05, I had an A500 in the nineties and have not really used one for a VERY long time, but its all coming back now! Absolutely will be using Amiga sellers (hence the AmigaKit stuff I have already got, just wanting to get my head around it all before making any more purchases and the missus killing me! -- repaired 2 ZX spectrums earlier this year and that was hard enough to explain! )

If you have the full set of 2.05 disks, you should be able to boot from the Install disk and get the system onto your hard drive. If all you have is a Workbench 2.05 disk, then that won't be possible, but the ethical concerns with downloading a full 2.05 disk set are fewer since your machine would have come with one originally and you just can't find it right now.
If you're still getting the blank DOS prompt even with the Install disk in the drive, then there's another issue going on. Hold down both mouse buttons when booting and select DF0 from the resulting menu to force a boot from that device instead of whatever has the highest priority. If that still doesn't work we'll continue the diagnostic. |
