A500 Power Supply
Hi,
I have just got some of my old A500s out storage, mainly to useca PiStorm. I found the Power Supply not working, probably the capacitors need replacing. I was wondering what is the best course action is, to repair the PSU or replace it with a Meanwell PSU? |

I used a regular Amiga power supply with a A500 and Pistorm. The PSU failed after 5 weeks.
Meanwell RT-65B is a popular choice for a Amiga PSU: https://www.retro32.com/amiga-resour...-rt-50b-rt-65b You need to fit that PSU into an Amiga PSU case because the 240V input connections are exposed. Myself I got a 2nd hand Astec AA21430 PSU. I believe these are quality power supplies because they are used in Cisco gear. No need to get it into a case just solder the output wires to a Amiga PSU output voltage cable. Though this looks a bit ugly. |

The Meanwell RT-65B would save trying repair the A500 PSU, which could fail later.
A quick Google search for RT-65B, showed the cheapish price, £14.24 So I will take that route. I gave read the Retro32 page on the RT-65B to Amiga, all straight forward. |

The A-Power units are based on a Meanwell RPT-60B, which doesn't have an adjustment on the 5V rail. Often it's not needed, but depending on the cable used, the machine's expansions and the condition of the connectors, you might find that it doesn't work as well as it should. The RT-65B has that adjustment capability. Personally, I would go with the PT-65B instead of the RT-65B as it has lower ripple in the output, but being an open-frame design and lacking screw terminals makes it a little less suited to basic DIY projects.
