Can you reccomend me a power supply for my Amiga 500?

Hi everybody,

sorry for the dumb question but I need your help.

I just ordered on eBay an ATX adapter for my Amiga 500 hoping that a modern ATX PSU would have the right quality and protection.

Can you recommend me a PSU model that is suitable for the Amiga 500?

Or just a new PSU even non ATX?

Thank you!

Not cheap, but pretty obvious choice if you plan to upgrade sooner or later (also, non ATX) :

You can get a small, SFX Apevia 400W PSU for $35 USD from Amazon. I use them for my CheckMate A1200 builds and they work well.

Didn't he / she mention he / she would consider "even not ATX" PSU ? Anyway, an A500 + the PSU I recommended make the right pair, plus it is 20% more efficient compared to the period brick PSU. It is the first time I hear about using an ATX PSU on an Amiga 500tbh. I have no reason to believe it should be avoided, but if I had to choose (all other things being equal), I would pickup the non ATX one with a straight face.

I'd look at picopsu.

I use that with my A500+, with an atx to amiga psu port adapter.

If you ordered the ATX adapter, use some old PSU, anything will do. There is never made a ATX PSU that will not drive the Amiga.

Best choise to me is the cheap but very nice Amiga PSU from www.c64psu.com

Apparently, building the PSU from scratch can be done :

I mean, it must be roughly how mine was made, with the differences being a) the Poles involved in this are pros b) it ought to cost less to pickup the parts separately

I recommend to buy a new PSU. Then you have eliminated one source of uncertainty for many years.

I have PicoPSUs for my Amigas, but if I were buying more, I'd probably buy the c64psu.com PSUs. They look very nice and you don't need the ATX adapter outside the Amiga.

You can buy a PC PSU if you're building the Amiga into a standard PC case; they are meant to be inside a case and don't look pretty on their own, with colorful cables going everywhere.
