CF0: Uninitialized

I have a CF in the PCMCIA slot with content which worked perfectly on the previous version of Workbench that I was using.

I've just installed Amiga OS 3.2 and swapped out the Kickstart Eprom fir v 3.2.1 - the machine boots into Workbench and now I want to access the CF in the PCMCIA. I don't recall how I did it previously but I found this link:

https://www.retro32.com/amiga-resour...river-disk-adf

It looks like it installs Fat95 and CFD - i mounted the ADF and ran the install. Then after rebooting I see the icon but it is greyed out:

'CF0: Uninitialized'

I'm treading carefully because I don't want to lose the content I have on the CF. As mentioned, it functioned perfectly with the previous WB version so hopefully I'm just missing a final step?

Thanks!

Edit: The Retro32 adf installs veritable bloatware that's not needed. I'd just install the 3 required files.

If you have a card reader for your PC, you can back up the complete card contents before trying things.

Did you previously access the CF using a mount file? If so, where is the mount file now?

I don't recall doing anything special, I think I just installed the drivers and it worked.

I have the option to format the drive in the latest version of Amiga OS but why is the disk showing as uninitialized, yet it has data and be read on the previous WB version I was using?

I've now backed up the flash drive to my PC using Dopus so I guess I'll re-format the drive now in the new Amiga OS? Will it use the correct format - I think it needs to be Fat95 iirc?

If you want to use it for exchanging data with your PC it has to be in FAT format ...

the Fat95 file should be in L: not the Fat95 drawer! CF card is formatted Fat32 iirc.

So it should be formatted on a PC? Which format does the Amiga OS use, I setup using the pfs3 handler, is that significant?

If you use an Amiga filesystem, the card can only be read using WinUAE on PC and you would not need FAT95 anymore

The point of using FAT95 is telling the Amiga to cope with a PC filesystem (FAT16/FAT32) and yes, you should format it on the PC then ...

No need to format it on the PC, just format it on the amiga.
(It will format as FAT)

CF0 is a FFS mounted compact flash card operating in RAM-Mode. This does not need any mount list, did not need one before and does not need one now. It is mounted by the kickstart. If you use a custom mount and want to use a FAT file system, you do not need FAT95 - the workbench comes with Crossdos, which can handle this fine. The name of the device, however, needs to end with the letter that indicates the partition if the drive is partitioned. Thus, for example, CF0C for the first partition (note the C at the end). So, that is the first thing. Next thing is the access mode. PCMCIA can be accessed in two ways: Either as RAM-Card, then the device in the mount list is the carddisk.device, which sits in ROM. Or, as an I/O device aka "disk like", and for that, you need a custom device, which does *not* come with the Workbench distribution. It is actually all explained in the readme of the workbench...

Sounds like OP CF card is gutted. It's happened to me before. CF card loses integrity. Image it on PC. Use diskpart on PC to clean the CF card and reformat. Copy-back image.

That's CC0 and it only works with SRAM cards, not Compact Flash.

CF0 only exists if you install Devs:compactflash.device and Devs:DosDrivers/CF0 and as delivered it uses FAT95 as file system.

Only if you make a CF0 mountfile with FFS, then you can use a CF card with FFS.

The whole point of CF0 and Fat95 is to make Amiga-PC file transfer simple, so it is beyond me why would someone use FFS. Check your installation. There was a comment about Fat95 drawer being in L. The Fat95 file (not the drawer) should be in L. Check this first before reformatting the card.

You don't need Fat95 with OS 3.2 as CrossDosFileSystem was heavily updated beginning with OS 3.1.4(.1) ...

Why mess about, just transer all files off card, then format CF in Amiga, transfer files back. Easier than messing with system files, which are obviously working fine.

I have seen this loads of times. Vanilla 2mb amiga sees card fine, add Accelerator, needs formatting. Seen same thing, when just changing OS or Filesystem. Can be frustrating.

Yes so I fixed this - I took the card and put it into my PC and backed it up. I then put the card back in the Amiga and formatted it, took it back to my PC and copied everything back across. Now works in the new amiga OS and PC so all good I think.
