Can't Untick Write-Protected

I'm trying to install Workbench on WinUAE, I've setup a hard drive but i'm getting the error that the disk is write-protected. I've tried to untick Write-Protected for the floppy drive but it won't let me. I've also made sure that the adf file isn't read-only so I'm stuck as to why it isn't working for me.

Thanks in advanced for any help.

Hi Neji, and welcome to EAB!

Are you tying to install to a physical hard drive, a folder on your Windows hard drive or a hard disk file (HDF)? All these can be configured as Amiga hard drives under WinUAE. Are you able to select your "hard drive" as the destination for the installation?

Thanks.

I'm trying to install it as a folder on my Windows HD.

Okay. Which version of Workbench do you wish to install? Do you have a Workbench install disk (if appropriate)?

If I get it right it's about the ADF that won't get unprotected. Is the checkbox greyed out? Which WinUAE version do you use Neji?

I have no idea about checkbox problem but my crystall ball says you have chosen "Novice" (never ever do that, it is stupid) install method and now it tries to "install" to install disk, not to harddrive.

It's 3.1. I've setup the HD differently and got a different error now though.

MAKEDIR: Couldn't Create Directory
DOS ERROR TYPE: Unable to write to a file or drawer -- it was write protected

That's the error now.

Also, I'm trying to play a HDF file of Valhalla, I can get it to launch but it plays the intro and cuts out back to the Workbench Screen. Any ideas why?

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: I'm using WinUAE version 1.6.1

Hmm, what exactly do you try to do? Install workbench? Or the game to HD and you booted from a WB disk?

I booted the Valhalla HDF files from the WB Disk.

I was trying to install Workbench though and wanted to install the game to a HD. IF that made sense

Forget Valhalla for the moment. Let's get Workbench installed. What about Toni's suggestion, did you tick "Novice" for the installation method? That is most likely to be the problem.

I know you probably think that "Novice" is the most suitable option for you to choose, but the other options give you a much better degree of control over the installation process. The "Novice" instal, option assumes you are using a floppy-only machine and defaults to the floppy drive as the destination device.

Yes, I think I get it
Do what Toni suggested. Add your Windows folder to the Harddrives panel and put the WB Install disk in the drive. Boot and don't choose 'Novice'. Then point the installation to your harddrive. I hope this also makes sense

I was using that first. I've now tried another method and get the last error I posted.

Can you make a screenshot of your Harddrive panel? You can attach it to your post (scroll down a bit and click on 'Manage Attachments').

Okay, R/W is yes. Can you choose the install it to 'HD' before the error occurs?

It asks me if I want to install Release 3.1 on the 'hd' partition. SO I click yes, then it asks me what languages to install and then what keymaps to install. I then get the error.

Perhaps it doesn't like the identical Device and Volume names. Try choosing a different name for your partition. Why wasn't the default Device name "DH0" assigned, I wonder?

You are on Vista. Try a location outside of program files for your HD (or run WinUAE with Admin rights).

Edit : Doesn't matter prowler. Both values can be the same and it still works.

This has to be the problem.. I think some kind of warning would be nice if read/write floppy or harddrive is located in protected directory.
