sixth gen consoles cheaper than old Miggy

What's with these scorching Amiga prices? Over here for the price of basic A600 (usually no box, yellowish) you need to shell out an equivalent of XBOX or PS2's value, let alone GameCube which costs 50% of that. Can anyone explain that? I know Amiga is older and probably fewer working A600 units than aforementioned consoles, but still a mystery to me. There's no way you could believe that price ratio 6 years ago!

average price I see on Dutch websites for an A600 (complete, working): 50 euros. Not a bad price. Not so many offers as two years ago though, the availability is seriously declining.

Yes, due to some people having 20 Amigas stored away that never get used. I've noticed a big increase in games over the past 4 years, and not just Amiga but other retro consoles like the NES. As more people have clear outs of their old hardware from their childhood and collectors and Retro users buy them, there will be less as these people are less likley to offer them for sale again. In 5 years the prices will be even worse unless a good FPGA replacement comes out.

BTW, anyone can do much more with a computer than a console. An Amiga is a computer, so I dont see the point of comparing it with a console.
A console is always less flexible.

also, people tend to bond more tightly with a computer than a console. I have yet to see a community devoted to something like GameCube or a English GameCube users board. So they give more value to them than they would give to a console.

Given the Gamecube and Xbox were only discontinued in the past 5? years they are still readily available. The Amiga is significantly older and there are probably less working examples now.

I guess that the Gamecube and Xbox will rise in value when they are over 10-15 years old as they become rarer and more break down leaving less working examples.

I also agree with Coze, the bond is stronger with computers such as the Amiga.

I've sold a few nice condition A600's and A500's (non yellowed) not that long ago for around £20-30 each (with PSU's and mouse etc..)... which i think is a fair price

Amiga users are now at THAT age where nostalgia drives people to collect (and pay over the odds for) memories of their youth.

Xbox and PS2 users havent yet realised that huge chunks of their youth are tied up in the lump of plastic and silicon languishing in the loft.....

I doubt a FPGA solution will lower the price of original hardware. There price of original Amigas will be higher and higher. A collector doesn't care about FPGA I think.

Maybe. But I'm hoping for a situation where the FPGA system is so good it can be a direct replacement and people sell off some of their classic hardware to purchase one. A bit like the flurry of accelerators now on ebay after the ACA anouncement. Although, some people are still looking for over the odds for their old boards so only time will tell.

Not much. A used one can be bought for around £10-15 and the Gamecube was not very successful or desirable compared to the PS2 or Xbox at the time.

Many retro consoles/computers can fetch a decent price, but not nearly as much as they would have cost new. An A1200 new in 1992 would have cost in the region of £400. It would never sell for nearly that much now.

There's also the fact that the vastly more successful Wii is backwards compatible with GameCube games, making the original GameCube even more obsolete.

This is because the wii is a gamecube slammed in a different shaped box and with the idea of causing humiliation thrown into the equation :P

The Xbox in my opinion is still a great machine with a few mods for all your arcade retro fixes, of course this may change soonish with the way things are coming along on the ps3 front at the moment.

Harsh... but basically true

Don't forget the added controller extension madness. With the Wii you don't buy games, you buy extensions to the console.
