I have an Mtec 1230 for sale:
MC68030@28Mhz (can be clocked to 42Mhz with modification) 68882 @ 28mhz (can be clocked to 33Mhz) 8MB of Fast Ram. This would be less than 100 (probably 75) As far as wifi, you will need to use WEP encryption/no encryption. That was a deal breaker for me. |

I'm sure you wont have to wait very long for someone to offer you a mouse Quote:
A mid range card such as a Blizzard 1230MkIII or Typhoon Mk2 will set you back about £125 and the latter also has built in SCSI on some of the models making it a very attractive purchase. The Blizzard 1230MkIII tales up to 32mb and the Typhoon 64mb both these cards address their memory in the 32bit space and do not cause any problems with the PCMCIA slot. At the top of your budget you'll be looking at a Blizzard 1230MkIV, this is the card I would recommend, I've had a couple and they are easily the best 030 cards I have owned for an A1200 and can take up to 128mb Ram (or 256mb with optional SCSI kit) These cards run very well indeed and again the memory is addressed in the 32bit space. You may find an Apollo 1240 <£150 but these are better suited for towers since 040's run pretty hot but with a fan they can bet used in a desktop however they only take up to 32mb Ram (or 64mb with optional 2nd Simm Socket but with this fitted will not fit in a desktop case) Again 32bit memory addressing. You wont find any 060 cards in your budget (unless you are very lucky indeed ) Quote:
Have to shoot out now but I'll update with some more info later if I can think of anything or suggest other cards Steve. |

thanks for the info guys, my goal is to play Doom and such games on the 1200 - something i wanted to do but could never do in the early 90s! and being able to play my huge library of early games to via whdload.
not sure if an 8 meg 030 would be able to do that? ideally i'd like more ram, 32? and... if possible , use the 1200 to browse the web, ive tracked a wifi card on Ebay, cheers Steve. |

To be honest you wont enjoy web browsing too much on an 030, especially the lower end but Doom will run even on an M-Tec 1230 with 8mb although it will be a bit choppy and swap to the HDD to load often. These cards are perfect however for a simple WHDLoad machine.
Doom is pretty smooth on my Blizzard 1230@50mhz with 64mb upwards of Ram and absolutely fly's on my 040's I would suggest for you to at least look for a Blizzard 1230 as this will really be the lowest configuration of card I would suggest for your setup and what you want to do with it. I've done some browsing on my Blizzard 1230 and its ok for Wap or text only pages but you won't be able to do much more with it. I've not tried IM'ing or MIRC and such but these should be fine on the lower spec cards. As I mentioned before you could stick an Apollo 1240 in there but it might get a bit too warm, even with the fan. An 060 (which will be amazing for your requirements as these run a lot cooler) will probably come in upwards of £250 so maybe an idea for the future. Oh and the 060's are a lot more compatible with WHDLoad games then the 040's. All the best with your search. Steve. |

Still has its uses though, WAP pages like EAB and Amibay mobile are awsome through the miggy also use it quite often to 'zone' files like ADF's that I created on the A1200

Should be a good starting point. Honestly for what you want, you are looking at a top end 1230 (Apollo/Blizzard or similar at 40/50mhz). A 1260 would be ideal, but are a lot pricier and you may realise that you dont need the power afterwards. |

i must admit it has been sometime since I last tried a 1200 'online' although I guess things have changed somewhat since the late 1990s! I remember trying Compuserve through IBrowse and it weren't great, main problem was with graphics - guess this can be solved with a better graphics card or the like in big box stuff? But using EAB/zone stuff would be cool through the mobile interface as you said
