Amiga Speedruns

Hi all,

In the last couple of years I was speedrunning various Amiga games, which is still today great fun for me.

There are several reasons why I did start this Thread:

1. I am constantly looking for games to run and I am pretty sure this is the right place to be to get some decent suggestions. The gerne does not really matter I am open for most games.

2. I wanted to raise awareness for the still small Amiga speedrunning scene, if anybody is interessted in joing but did not know how to start I am here to help you out.

You can check out my speedrun.com profile to get a better overview about my current achievments for the Amiga community:
https://www.speedrun.com/user/MilkToast

I also have a small YT channel with more runs (most are Amiga, but I also do some old DOS games)
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFp...PfrQCtz9a0UF7g

Additonal to that if you are on Twitch you can watch me practicing or performing most of my speedrun attempts:
https://www.twitch.tv/amigaruns
(at the moment I am practicing Shadow of the Beast, Indy 4 & Dune)

I am looking forward to some neat game suggestions and also fingers crossed somebody of you will join this very fun hobby.

Best Regards
MilkToast

Hi welcome to EAB.
Just subscribed to your channel and will watch a few runs now.
Amiga speed running is hugely dependent on the system used/emulated/real media/WHDLoad. How are the standards set?

I have always wondered if anyone did speed runs of old text adventures like those from Magnetic Scrolls.

Hi
thanks for subscribing I hope you found something you liked

Finding the best setup is a complicated topic. In general you try to find the fastest setup in which the game is still playable. The goal should be the reduction of loading times which can really slow down your attempt on the long run.
A good example is Monkey Island 2:
The top runners all play the Amiga Version, because it runs the fastest of all available version. They also use a special custom made ScummVM version to run the game even faster. So finding the fastest setup is common.
Personally I use most of the time the WHDLoad of a game using WinUAE.
It might even be better to use FS-WINUAE, but I have not really used and tested it.
Due to the very small number of Amiga runners there is not much research done finding the best setups, most of the time I am on my own trying to find out what works best for me.
Sure you can always agree on a setup with others runners thats no problem.
My main competitors are DOS/PC gamers, so I can look at their runs and compare if I can match their speed. Of course the Amiga version is most of the times slower so it gets its own Leaderboard (with some exceptions of course, but this does not matter to me)
So the answer your question:
There are no real standards set, as long as they are not written down in the rules for the game (like Paperboy i.e.).

Really funny that you are wondering about Text Adventures, because I am running one at the moment. I always wanted to do one, which does have some nice graphics and is not that long.
On speedrun.com there are some Zork games submitted.

Cheers MilkToast

@MilkToast. There was me thinking speedruns on the Amiga didn't exist.. It's good to see the Amiga getting some love in this department, was very surprised at the lack of them to be honest and then I find this thread.. I see you have some very impressive results

I had an "attempt" recently with Turrican II stage 1, thought I'd share. Nothing special but it's a start. Might do some more.

@lordofchaos

Thanks you, I really appreciate it . I started with Settlers 1 back in the day and got hooked super quick. The lack of Amiga games was one of the reasons I focused more or them, so I try to fill the void a bit.

Cool to see your own attempts (you can skip some of the level by jumping up the windy hill....looks impossible but works. If not already figuered out by yourself).
There was a new runner appearing on the Turrican 2 Leaderboards is this you?

@ZEUSDAZ I have no experience with that game (only the Barbarian on the C64), maybe I will give it a try.
btw I know your channel - cool

I am currently working on Bart vs The World on the Amiga. Such a crappy game, looking forward when its finished.

Hah, Bart vs The World was extremely crappy, but I liked all the mini-games! Those probably won't be part of the run though

The skateboarding bit on the Great Wall was fun, but insanely buggy if I recall. My game would often crash if I hit an obstacle.

I'd love to see a speed run of Alien Breed 3D, also Breathless. I think 3D games lend themselves better to it, IMHO.

Hi,

@mirthturtle
Well I gave up on this for the moment, its just to crappy, but I am at least able to beat it, so I will definitly come back to it on one point.

@SteveJGore
I have no expierence with both titles, I need to check them out. I only played Gloom so far and it not worth the grind imho.

I've got a question about Cannon Fodder for you guys:
Is only the "Naming a savefile JOOLS" cheat working on the Amiga?
On other system there are passwords, levelskip etc and other possibilities to progress in
this game on "easy" mode, but it seems none of them are working on the Amiga.
Does anybody know more about this and is there something like a possibilitiy to skip a level?

I am asking, because from time to time I do a run of the single Levels (No Death), but I dont have any old save files so I had to start from the beginning and I just want to check out all the Levels without beating the whole game. I am currently at Mission 08 and this gives me already nightmares (but I get better at it).
Better then a working cheat would be if anybody knows where I can get some save files for it, that would be so awesome.
I am playing the WHDLoad Version 2.0

Btw:
I also did a run for Maniac Mansion and got the Amiga/DOS Leaderboard kicked off, if somebody is interessted in the run you can check it out here:

Cheers

I'd love to see any kind of longplay of Rogue Trooper and Aquanaut (the Fissionchips one). They've never been recorded as far as I know.

I'd like to see any longplay/shortrun of Magic Pockets. The only longplay in YT is a fraud.

You mean they've used a trainer or done some dodgy editing? That's a bit pointless if they don't admit it in the description.

Does anyone maintain a list of games that have never been longplayed? I think that would be really interesting if it included the reasons e.g. ones that are broken beyond workarounds, ridiculously unfair etc. It could also detail who has made the most progress re: completing the games. There's still some kudos in that I think. We could call it Longplays That Weren't... yeah I know, I've been working on that for years.

@jotd (Nice Nickname, I remember typing this a lot in KQ5 or was it jodt...?)
I need to check out how difficult Magic Pockets is and if I like to invest the time to learn it. BUt it looks promising,.

@dreamkatcha
I will also check out Aquanaut and Trooper I dont know both of them.
Yes that would be some interessting things to know, but also a lot of work.
As a starting point you can check out the Amiga Games section on speedrun.com.
95% of the listed games are completed legit.

I managed to beat Cannon Fooder Mission 6 without losing any soldier btw:

Was that the good ending with enough cash?

You must have had very good luck with firstly getting the best events, and then doing them well etc...

Hi,

No I only did collect 5000$ for the normal ending.
For the best ending you need 8000$ (or 10.000$ not sure yet) so the House also gets repaired, but thats quite difficult to achieve.

The trick is to master the slapping minigame in which you can slow down the hand, thats makes it easy to pick the right tiles.

Here I will link the video:

I also did a run for Leisure Suit Larry 1 (11m 48s) and was able to beat some of the DOS runners with a decent time and good RNG in the Casino and with meeting the Apple Guy:
This was really a lot of fun totally recommend this for speedrun starters:

In the last couple of days I was practicing Leisure Suit Larry 3 (100% Max Points), nobody did this before so 1st place is for sure mine

I will post a link to this run in the next days.

Cheers

ahhh you're using whdload version - spell protection removed (enter J,O,T and D, you've got infinite tries anyway). I didn't remember that. Made that crack in 2003

You seem to master some difficult games. Don't look at the youtube longplay everyone agrees that the player cheated in the last level. there's a lengthy discussion here: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?...ckets+longplay

Magic Pockets is by all means underrated. And it has warps so shortruns are possible. But you're missing so many bonuses and secrets then. Looking forward for a vid with ending without cheat.

Thanks.

Most of the games I run I use WHDLoad (its such a blessing) and I am so grateful for the work you put into this to remove the copy protection. (and all the other games you did in all these years.)

Yes I working my way through a lot of Amiga games (most of them I played when I was way younger and couldnt beat most of them, but now is my turn and I take bitter sweet revenge on all of them ).

Yeah some of the games I run are rather difficult (like Darkmere, Rod Land, Lost Patrol, Cannon Fooder or the later Settlers Levels), but with some practice everybody can master them.
TBH the most difficult game I did was "Rags to Riches" for the C64, but also one of the best games I ever did a speedrun of (I also got the WR for it and I am really proud of it) - love it!

Magic Pockets I never owned/played back then so I need to get into it first, but its often recommened as a very well made game. If there is such a great "need" for a decent video I will of course at least try it.
If there are Warps and Shortcuts then I think I wll tackle this first (this would be an Any% run) and if I got hooked on it I can go for a 100% with the secrets and bonuses. Lets see.

Btw: If there are other cool Amiga games lacking of a video let me know.

Over and Out

Hi all,

I did a Speedrun of It cam from the Desert in 10min and 48s. Its not perfect in anyway because there are more risky strats to beat this game faster. I decided to do it the safe way to at least get it of my bucket list. I really at a hard time to figure out all the different routes and strats. After all I am happy with my run (still you can beat it 2min faster the me)
[ Show youtube player ]

If you are interessted in more information about the routes/strats I am happy to help.
Anyway Enjoy!
