Renegade III (Amiga), Why Even Bother?

Well any of us that owned an 8-bit machine remember just how bad Renegade III was compared to the brilliant prequels so the big question is why on earth did they think for a second that if the 8-bit versions were bad then why would a 16-bit version be a better gamble?!

Well here it is, this was indeed what would have been the official release if it had been finished as mentioned by one of the programmers himself on my longplay recording of it,...not a poor PD fan made attempt.

I give you Renegade III - The Final Chapter SGT Review: [ Show youtube player ]

Love to hear your thoughts on this cancelled (thank god) version, enjoy!

Man this looks even more yank than I remember it. I had the... pleasure of owning this one. I just picked it at random because the name sounded cool. We always got our pirated copies off of the same guy and he distributed a list of his games so every time we had pocket money to spend I spent ages scanning that list for titles I would want... Unfortunately I spent actual money on this :/

You got to the second stage quite quick actually, I think I only ever saw it once or twice myself

The climbing animation is... oof. *chef's kiss*.

Just played it for a bit and has No music, No sounds. Tried it with a trainer. Still not a pleasure to play. Terrible!
This one definitely needs an extra flush down that porcelain bowl!

The 8-bit one (I played the ZX version) is not actually that bad if you take it out of the prequel context. If it was released standalone with different protagonist and some sort of "Time Warrior" title it'd probably get 6-7s in the mags and much warmer reception in general.

Why bring it to Amiga? Well, why port anything that's already easily available? Maybe they thought the final version could improve on 8-bit or at least be passable and they couldsqueeze some bucks out of it. Maybe it was meant as a budget, who knows. In any case, it was rightfully canned so no big harm done.

I mean it was the Renegade IP that was on the line, I can understand that the publisher wanted to make one last ditch effort to try and salvage it. But as the demo proved, there is no amount of seasoning that makes that bland mess more palatable.

I still do like the idea behind the game, beating up T-Rexes and mummies and whatever other non-human creature. Most games just have you beating up street thugs.
