Amiga 1000 Cover

Sorry if this has been asked before (I searched but could not find it).

But I have an Amiga 1000 that is missing the front cover. It's the cover that goes over the RAM expansion.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

I thought about 3D printing it but I usually don't like the results. And, I'd never match the color.

Thanks.

If you have access to a 3d printer why not print one until you can find something better? There are at least 2 on thingyverse.

You could print one and then paint it to match.

The best way to colour match with 3D printing is to grind up a spare of the thing you’re trying to match and make your own filament with something like a filastruder.

Well, I don't own a 3D printer but there is one at my local library. So that could be an option. I could paint it. Anyone know the paint color? I don't think it's pure white.

It's not a huge rush for me so I don't mind waiting for one to show up.

Or, if anyone had one 3D printed already, maybe we can work something out.

I still need to repair the Amiga 1000. It won't boot. :-D

Thanks

With the age of the A1000's, they would all be different colours now. The best way would be to take the front panel (the full front panel) into a paint store and have them colour match a paint to that.

Does A1000 ask for the kickstart disk?

I’ve been down the route of trying to match the colour - multiple attempts to get the right colour from a company specialising in custom colour plastic paint and multiple emails where they first told me I’d not put enough paint on, then told me I’d put too much on, then told me I was looking at it wrong.

Now I just print my stuff in transparent ABS and consider it a feature (you can see the honeycomb infill, it doesn’t look bad). BuildTak print surface gives a pretty good texture very similar to the original cases too.

Unfortunately my printer is in storage at the moment due to a move, or I’d offer to help you out.

Paint and plastic will never match exactly, one can only get close. There are many factors when painting that come into play. One can always paint the entire case with a colour as close as possible to the original, then it would all match.

I get that, plus I know that ABS is slightly transparent, giving a subtlety that paint will never match, but the paint that I got, produced by experts using the latest, regularly calibrated, spectrometers, was orange.

I wouldn’t try and stop anyone else from trying it, I just want to set expectations, particularly as colour matched paint isn’t cheap.

On the other hand, there are companies that will produce filament in any RAL colour. Perhaps someone wants to organise a group buy, or convince one of the retailers that there’s a demand so they start carrying it as a stock colour?

It's been a while since I last looked. But I know that I never saw the kickstart screen. I only got color (er...colour) flashes. I have a few working Amiga 500's. So I thought about digging my A1000 out and see if I could fix it. I was unsuccessful the first time.

**EDIT**

I found this in my notes:

Quote:
Amiga 1000! Not working. Case very dirty. Missing faceplate that covers front RAM expansion. Tried to repair in 2018-08. Swapped out CPU, Denise, Paula and both CIA chips. Boot stops at light-gray screen. Gave up for now.
I won't go OT (even though it's my thread...lol). When I start repairing it, I will ask for some help. But seems like I got pretty far last time.

I really appreciate the offer. :-)

My first priority should probably get it running. I'm itching to work on a new project anyway (I have almost 100 vintage computers...so plenty to work on...lol).

I 3D printed (well, used a commercial high-res printing service) and then painted one, you can get pretty close, although the texture won't match exactly:

Wow. That looks pretty good.

Did you use one of the designs off the Thingaverse?

I modeled it myself based on my other A1000 which still had the cover. Only afterwards did I realize that someone had already created a model Those ones are probably at least as good or better, I'm not much of a 3D designer.

Nice job on the 3D print.

However, look at the colour match on these parts!!! And yes, the mildy transparent off white is there because the pigment is mixed into the plastic while it's being printed to get some amazing results...check these out...

@riscman: if you are the seller of these, congratulations! You need to make an A1200 rear trapdoor with RJ45 + USB and I’ll get some for my future Vampire. HDMI will go through the RF modulator space...

I need also to do 3D parts for my A1000. Backplate and the right side
expansion port cover are missing.

I measured the case colour with Colormunki spectrometer. First I
washed the case with soap. I did measurements only from inside both
base and cover and from many spots and took 30+ samples from each spot
to cancel noise. The values I am showing are averages for each spot.

In the base under the PSU CIELab was 75.61 1.82 11.28. It was the
lowest "b" in the base inside but there are lower values in the
cover. Under the mainboard below floppy drive the highest b was 75.08
1.88 12.29.

In the cover lowest "b" value was in 75.56 1.87 10.45 above the 68k
area with "Chris R" and Chinese signatures. Also in the area with the
cover piace part number facing printer, floppy and serial ports was
75.66 1.92 10.71. The area facing the RAM expansion and Dale Luck
signature had the highest "b" with 74.91 1.92 11.50.

The cover outside has 76.09 1.7512 10.6613 at the center and and the
corner next keyboard connector has 75.06 1.8216 12.2968.

The front panel has visibly yellowed. Left side 74.07 1.9982 14.1111
right side 73.68 2.0291 13.1677.

I bought Gotek drive with 3D printed frame for A1000. It looks a bit
more gray and a bit lighter than A1000. Its CIELab values are 77.1
1.94 8.05.

The original question was about paint codes. At
https://www.e-paint.co.uk one can enter CIELab values and searches the
closest paints.

I wrote a script to sort the RAL Classic and few hand pickel RAL
Design colors in ascending order with respect to Delta-E from given
reference point.

In the following table the first value is CIE2000 Delta-E, then RAL
colour code, colour name and its CIELab values. The smaller the
delta-E is, better and closer to the A1000 case colour median values.

Reference: 75.1, 1.86, 11.35

2.75, ?, Gotek, 77.069, 1.944, 8.05

8.73, RAL 1001, Beige, 73.595, 5.518, 26.95
9.11, RAL 9002, Grey white, 85.07, -1.04, 5.18
9.22, RAL 1000, Green beige, 76.022, -0.366, 27.636
9.50, RAL 7035, Light grey, 80.047, -1.207, 1.387
9.50, RAL 7047, Telegrey 4, 80.668, -0.266, 0.82
9.71, RAL 9018, Papyrus white, 81.343, -2.293, 2.956
10.18, RAL 9001, Cream, 89.616, 0.594, 8.06

Based on these figures the RAL 7032 "Pebble grey" might be the closest
availabale for me. Those RAL Design colors would require custom
filament. I am going to try 9010 and 1015 and they both are available
as PLA.

Then I would also ABS parts to repair broken clips and standoffs but
they are inside the case and not visble. 3D printed white ABS will do
for them.

Some of the colors are just too light but otherwise the color match is
good. Perhaps I could darken the too light plastic by painting dirt on
it?

RAL 9001 Cream has CIELab values 89.616, 0.594, 8.06. If I add black
to reduce L to 75.1 its delta-E shifts from 10.18 to 2.73.

Does anyone have a link to somewhere selling new A1000 backplates with extra connector holes? I saw some nice plexiglass ones, and I could imagine a shiny aluminium CNC'd one would be possible (like my A4000 front replacement)!

I sent my RAM exansion port cover to Colorfabb for an analysis. They
found an existing close match from their database. Their color plate
label says it is from Commodore 64 but I presume it was the 64C model
from 1986 rather than the original breadbin in 1982.

After sanding Cielab values of the print were 78.3 2.06 11.4 and its
DelteE is only 1.65 from my A1000 cover top center. This is better
than I could have expected.

The order code for this filament from Colorfabb is "PLA 710008". The
750g spool was 47.50 euros without VAT and shipping. Doing perfect
colour matching would have been more expensive because of 70+ matching
fee and 2.1kg minimum order.

In the photo there are three 3D printed backplates and RAM expansion
port cover against A1000 cover top. The backplare pieces are in white,
RAL Ivory Beige and PLA 710008 from Colorfabb. Jpeg is so convenient
but not the best tool to compare colours.

There are A1000 backplate model files in thingverse with VGA and HDMI
ports. I have modified them for myself to fit better with A1100
motherboard and make 90 degress corners rounded.
