Does your HP monitor accept 50hz signals via the Retrotink? I was planning to use my 2x-SCART with my Dell 2001FP but it won’t do 50hz over DVI (via HDMI convertor).

Nice write up squakbox!
The only thing I'll add is that I've always found s-video to produce a nice picture, comparable to rgb or component, as long as the cabling is good quality.

@rare_j
Thanks a bunch. Before I got hold of the HP, I was using a Samsung Syncmaster 214T which offered S-Video input (well, in the meantime, I have been using a 19'' 16:10 HP Compaq, but let's skip that one). Made a few attempts to play PS2 games on the Samsung with that PS2 S-Video cable of mine, it didn't look too good (similar to composite), except when it came to FPS maybe (Black...). I got the high grade smelly S-Video cable later on, but I am pretty positive the receiver was responsible for the unsatisfying image.

@lilwshu
I don't think it is a matter of 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The HP monitor doesn't know what to do with the signal coming from the Retro Tink 2X (whether the PS1 is turned on or off), it just goes into standby mode after a few seconds as if nothing was plugged in. If you want to play PAL games on a flat screen (we're talking normal LCD's here, not top of the crop FreeSync enabled and such), SquawkBox would advise peeps to get a LCD TV (4:3 ideally) instead.

Has the fantastic ability to down sample 3D models that are rendered in a higher resolution back down to lowres. Basically it gives you multisampling. Allows you to keep the games in lowres while getting a big rendering improvement. This is great for when you don't like that highres stuff that gives you a miss match of lowres backgrounds and crappy looking highres models and just want the original resolution. Original left, improved right:

That's pretty cool. Gives it a hand-drawn kind of look. Reminds me of Flashback.

Personally, I love this era of 3D. Developers were still trying to figure out the possibilities of the medium and the limitations of the hardware. I was (and am) in the Saturn camp and the technical wizardry on that platform impresses me far, far more than most things today. Probably for the same reason Amiga demos continue to impress. The unexpected can still wow.

Since i finally have a xstation ODE installed i've played Ridge Racer Type IV a lot. Also Alundra 1, still a fine Zelda clone.

Yep, Duckstation is a fine (newer) PSX Emulator. A lot of nice features, clean GUI and a very good compatibilty.

I did that with Final Fantasy 7 a long time ago... goodbye 80 hours of my life, at least half of which was spent grinding to level up materia I cured myself of wanting to do 100% completion runs, 50% is more than enough for me.

Of course. Things were a lot harder. Current and recent hardware makes things more straightforward. I've tried some basic shader programming and it's just insane what those GPUs can do without breaking a sweat. That seriously makes things look less impressive.

I just completed the New Game + in Yoyo‘s Puzzle Park on PS1 for the first time in my life. Yoyo’s Puzzle Park is the best Bubble Bobble type game IMO.

Love Einhander - sadly too difficult for me after the water level.
Only saw past that by abusing save states.
Also love R-Type Delta. Same deal though - rock hard on the later levels!

Quake 2 - CD still works after many years. Barely working controller adds some additional difficulty.

I played more hidden gems on my PS1, now connected via Retrotink 5x via HDMI:
- N-Gen Racing: Awesome futuristic racing in planes, made by people who also made WipeOut
- Sled Storm: Wonderful snow mobile racing. It really feels like racing in powder snow and ice.

I'm playing PS1 games through Retropie on the Pi4 (4gb)
I've been mashing R-type Delta lately (the 3d one)
It's really addictive, but it seems to crash at the end of level 2.
I've tried different ROMs and Google is coming up a blank when searching for a fix.
Anyone play else played it on the pi, config setting maybe? or can someone point me to a known good ROM.

He plays from an ISO, not from real console.
@sneckburger
What emulator do you use ? I don't think a fix is needed to play this game in Retropie.
