Noob needs help with whdload

Hi, I'm having difficulty getting whdload to run on an Amiga 1200.

Is there by any chance a step by step guide on how to set it up. I'm using Amiga OS 3.1

I have put software onto a CF and taken it of via the PCMIA card using the programme easy ADF.

Everytime I try and click on a game though I get told 'unable to open installer.' I have downloaded installer 43.3 as suggested and linked in the FAQ's but again I'm just not getting anywhere.

I know I'm probably doing something wrong but this is the first time I have used an Amiga in possibly over ten years and I'm just not comfortable with workbench at all at the moment so this endevour is becoming increasingly frustrating. Can anyone point me in the direction of what I'm doing wrong?

Hi tomv1to and welcome to EAB!

I assume you're using the WHDLoad installers found on http://www.whdload.de/. These need the original disks to install the game. Instead you should grab the preinstalled versions from http://www.whdownload.com/ or the big packs from http://kg.whdownload.com/kgwhd/

Use installer v44.10
You can find it at Killergorilla's site.
Just extract and copy it to C, that should do the trick.

You could of course also use ClassicWB, everything comes preconfigured saving you the trouble of setting things up.

Hmm, isn't installer only needed if you want to install a game yourself? Not sure if tomv1to already has WHDLoad itself installed, but you can easily just copy the files over without the need of the installer.

I'm pretty sure I'm installing whd load. I install it to C: and then nothing happens.

I've tried getting and using the games that are preinstalled from whdownload.com but I get the whdload 16.9 screen asking me to register the software, then the screen goes black for a milisecond then I get an error message (which varies from title to title but the most uncommon error message I get it DOS-Error #205 (object not found on reading "Disk 1."

When I try to play the games I download them, then unzip them on the PC then I put them onto the CF card and then put that into the Amiga. Then to run the games I click on the small icon of the game.

Is there anything I'm supposed to be doing that I'm not? Please don't be afraid of talking to me like a child I have no idea what I'm doing.

Seems like you have correctly installed WHDLoad then. It's not recommended to unzip the games on PC and then copy them over to the Amiga. You should put the zip on the CF card and unzip them on the Amiga. Can you give an example for a game that quits with the #205 error?

How much memory do you have?

Its a standard Amiga 1200 with 3.1 kickrom. I don't know how much memory they come with.

I don't have a key. Though I'd be more than happy to buy one if I can get this up and running.

Project X and Apidya give me the dos error message. Alien Breed and Alien Breed Tower Assualt both throw up the error message 'Can't locate exp mem.'

I'll try putting the zip files on the flash card as well then. Is there any other special software I will require to unzip the files on the amiga?

Cheers for the help guys.

EDIT: Quick update. I couldn't figure out how to unzip the files using the amiga, however using the download big packs I have been able to get 1943 up and running. Which is pretty sweet. Will now try a couple of the other games as well.

Have a look on the title bar on your Workbench, that should tell you how much memory you've got. If it says '0 other mem' that means you've just got the standard 2MB and you might well find that the problem is not enough memory to load the bigger games.

Hmm, there shouldn't really be a problem with Project X and Apidya. Might really be the CF transfer then.

Use http://aminet.net/package/util/arc/UnZip to unzip them on your Amiga.

Edit : You should disable the 'Preload' option for Project-X though. To do that, click on the icon once, hold down your right mouse button, select 'Icon -> Information' for the menu at the top of the screen and put brackets around 'Preload'. Save that afterwards.

This is just depressing. Only about 1 in 10 games that I try actually works. And they are the ones that I have no interest in playing.

The errors that I get are always the same ones listed above, or I get the occasional. Need a to play the game.

I just have the standard 2mb of memory.

You definitely need some fast ram in your A1200, 4 megs should do it for most games.
8 megs if you want The Settlers to run.

I only really wanted to play Project x, Apidya, Cannon Fodder 1+2, Dune and Alien Breed (including 3D)

Is it a lack of memory thats stopping me from playing these games or is it my general incompetence. The only game I was anticipating problems with specs wise was Alien Breed 3D.

Is it worth trying out Classic Workbench over Workbench 3.1 which is currently installed on the machine?

Now none of the games are working, not even the ones I was getting going will run at all.

It seems like I'm just incapable of getting this damned thing to work at all. I've downloaded the UnZip, and again extracted it using the EasyADF but now how do I get it to work. I can see the draw with it labelled but I just don't know how to use the programme as there are no executable icons for me to click on. How do I now unzip any of the files?

Try a simple 1 disk WHDload game like Great Giana sisters to test everything is working ok.
Ill put non WHDload versions of Cannon Fodder and Project-X in the Zone that should be suitable for you setup.

You'll need to use the CLI (Shell). If you aren't used to that, maybe ClassicWB lite is an option for you

Ive put Project-X and Cannon Fodder in the Zone suitable for your setup -Should be able to unzip in Windowz as theres no long filenames.

Great Giana Sisters should also unzip under Windowz.
