A Captive Audience

You've probably played one of Tony Crowther's games; perhaps his sci-fi RPG epics Captive and Liberation or one of his lighter games like Captain Planet. Amiga Lore traces his gaming output in this article.

The full interview is here.

Nice article.

One thing i'd like to know is did Tony Crowther also go under the pseudonym of Tony McGarry because both the WHDLoad installs for Knightmare and Captive were done by the same person.

ACE magazine ran a competition to name the game and in issue 37 reported that the winning entry was "Captive". According to the magazine, the runner up entries were The C.A.L.L.E.D. (The Cryogenic Awakening Lost Logic Emphatic Droids) and Escape From (Galacto) Cryo-Crypt 248c/418 serious" (sic).
Page 49 of issue 37 more precisely (I just checked the scan available on CIA).

Two interesting things:
- 418+218 = 666

- Apparently, the winner - John Millward - was to be credited in the game itself. But as far as I could see he was not.

Thats what i'm hinting at yes. The only two this Tony McGarry did was two Tony Crowther games, and particularly tricky ones to crack I might add.

I'm quite sure that Tony McGarry and Antony Crowther are 2 different persons. Reason for the WHDLoad installs is probably that he liked those games and hence made patches for them.

Personally, i'm not convinced. Liking the games and wanting to install them both, that I can accept, but neither games are lightly protected, especially Knightmare, and yet both were installed a long time ago with no issues whatsoever, no errors and seemingly done 100% first time.

It took Phil Douglas to do the only 100% crack of Knightmare, everyone else got defeated by it.

I could be wrong of course, but i'm not convinced

Yes, I know that these games (especially Knightmare) weren't exactly easy to crack, however, I'm still quite sure that these are 2 different persons as I googled both names before replying here.

He is mentioned on the "Credits" section of the manual (last line of http://captive.atari.org/Main/Releas...eleaseInfo.php) although the reason is not specified.

Thanks, that will make an interesting trivia note in the HOL entry of the game.

Would you happen to know in which issue the competition was announced?
I guess it was an issue relatively close to issue 37, but it will save time if I don't have to browse through all the pages of the ACE scans.

The simple layout is just due to my complete lack of design skills!

Next up is an article about Magnetic Fields.
