I think I finally get what the fascination is where retro-gaming is concerned...

...It's not that the games are better (though many are)

...It's not that the hardware is better (though it's certainly less dull)

...It's not even that you make friends with a better class of people (though you certainly do)

...It's because it reminds me of happier days...

...I'm not saying my life is miserable - far from it. I'm not saying I don't have fun any more - I do.
But I've spent a large part of the afternoon playing L2TT on my A3000 in peace, without interruptions, with nothing else pressing to do.

You know what? It was a moment of simple happiness. A return to what it was like to be genuinely at peace, unburdened by the daily responsibilities of being a grown-up. Oh, and it was fun!

D*mn I must be getting old.

I don't agree with this issue at all, though.
I have no nostalgia for any of these things, I think that limitations exploit creativity to a point where modern availability and power of hardware does not allow.

When you can't express something exactly as it is "in reality", you have to invent ways to convey your message.

All these games have this appeal to me.
- They are more fun, because if they weren't , there wasn;t much to look at. - They are more inventive. To catch the eye they had to give somkething other mediums of entertainment wouldn't
- They imaginatively use the host hardware and brilliantly circumvent original hardware limitations to go further than allegedly possible.


You don';t find this in current games.

Yup, nostalgia.. love it.... it's like certain rare emotions and feelings you had in the old days when first playing amiga games, when amiga was the most powerful thing there was, first with alot of things etc... they are all stored and surfaces anytime you play your favorite amiga games again.

You can feel sad, you can feel bored, you can own the latest top rated PC games and play them and even like playing them... but when you start up one of the old amiga classics, you get feelings any of todays PC games can't give you, which could make playing these old games way more fun than todays games.......... gfx+sound isn't everything.

It's like.... if you were introduced to a special smell, and everytime you got to smell that smell you got a blow job from your dream girl.... then if it would stop, and years later you would feel that smell again, you would feel happy , or horny, whatever...... so, it's all stored... you could have forgotten about the smell totally, but no matter what you do, when you smell it again, those memories and the feelings you had comes back...

well... sort of like that I guess....

Nice thread! Everyone has it's opinions and i agree partly to many posts in here. But i still can't find a definitive answer to as why i'm "still" fiddling with these old Amigas

I'd agree, I spent many hours enjoying Silent Service on Atari ST, Starflight on Genesis, KOEI games on NES, Shadowrun on SNES, etc with nary a worry in the world.

i'm not entirely sure myself how it can always be called nostalgia, even when you are using new hardware, or playing a game you never played "back in the day" .... retrogaming, is retrogaming , is retrogaming. it's just enjoyable to a certian mindset


I've been playing Lemmings 2 on PSPUAE recently, and it's been great fun. I certainly havent been overcome with waves of nostalgic memory of using the game to avoid GCSE revision and getting myself stressed however....

I'd argue that its just biased nostalgia, not that its a bad thing for "happier times". When you have "seen it all", something extra is required to excite you. I think on average the games are better today, but what I demand from a game has risen considerable.

My brother gets the exact same "get.the.game.now.open.the.box.frenzy" as I got with my amiga, the difference is that its SFIV for the first time instead of SF2 on 4 disks... and well its a perfect conversion instad of an US gold crap.

Well, compared to most of todays people, new games for me doesn't have to have that "something extra", I like simple games.... and todays are not always that... like, Dune2, love it, but todays games like command and conquerer, supreme commander etc... it's too much stuff u have to do to make stuff work.. it ruins the gameplay for me...

simpler game is what I like.... .... so, the games in my youth were better... as I don't care about gfx or originality in todays games...
