A4000 desoldering hardware pr0n for Zetr0

Got a clean A4000, but with (of course) broken RAM sockets and leaky SMD caps. What do you do? You desolder the 5 RAM sockets and all the SMD caps.

This is how it looks now, before fresh components will be soldered on (click on the image):

I will keep you updated when I get the RAM sockets from amigakit, and the SMD caps from Cosmos.

I hope you have a desoldering gun, removing 5 simm sockets by hand would really be really time consuming

Loedown: I used a heat gun to heat up the area from the underside, then I peeled off the sockets, then I used a soldering iron + desoldering pump + flux to manually remove the solder residue.

roy_bates:
I'll post updates yes, and I'll of course use 45 degree sockets (90 degree won't work, at least not with all five sockets).

I haven't measured the spacing between each simm socket but 90 degree may indeed work, similar to the old simm memory in PC.

Nope, it won't work. Just look at the socket arrangement... You'd need either 45 degrees or 180 degrees.
Well, it might work for two fast RAM sockets and one chip RAM sockets, but I want to have them all.

Oops... It's actually my mistake. 90 degrees would be straight up from the board, 45 degrees would be angled, 180 degrees would be laying flat, like on some Amiga accelerators.
Or..?

Even if you could fit vertical sockets, the simms would get in the way of any card in the lower zorro slot.

Looking forward to seeing more pictures of this mobo being refurbished (it used to be mine).

I don't even have the daughterboard fitted in mine so it's not really a consideration at this stage, but then my ram slots don't need replacing.

All done (click for biggy):

Had to cut some on the RAM socket plastics to make it fit. It's not 100% square with the mobo, but it's a snug fit and I did a super good soldering job. Lots of flux residue there, the board is super sticky... No idea how to remove that properly, I tried a lot of isopropanol alcohol, but there's always some sticky residue left.

Again, the board is not warped, my camera is dumb. The SMD cap next to the keyboard connector is not bent, it's just how it looks on the pic (quite weird).

It's alive!
It's 16MB total, it's just that my setup is using around 4MB of mem when booted:

Things left to do:
- Clean up the keyboard and change out the yellowed keys with Norwegian white keys
- Change C443 and C443 SMD caps with non-polarised 22µF 16V through-hole
- Solder on a coin battery socket with a Schottky-diode
- Replace the noisy PSU fan with a quieter one
- Get a white DVD-ROM instead of the black one
- Get a CF2IDE adapter with a normal female 3.5" IDE connector
- Get an A3640 v3.2 accelerator

I decied to get an A3640 v3.2 first, until I find a rather cheap (good luck, myself) 060.

You could check out http://efunzine.com for an accelerator card. I bought a CyberStorm 060 Mk2 from there not too long ago. The site is in polish, but google translator works. The order basket does not work through the translator, but you can send a mail to them.
