Can any parallel printer be made to work on an Amiga

No.

1. you need a printer which has its own firmware. GDI printers won't work.

2. you need a printer for which an Amiga driver exists. Without a driver it won't print anything (except plain text perhaps).

Most if not all true postscript printers should work. I currently use a brother 2170 and 2070 laser with turbo print laserjet 6 and the photosmart 75xx driver opperates my officejet 8500.
