Plastic on Plastic = damaged stuff! How to fix?

I recently took in a pair of Competition 5000 joysticks that are faulty.

Both have wiring issues.

One of these joysticks has this common problem of the lead having been wrapped around it, this has then melted into the plastic casing on the joystick.
Apart from trying to flatten the dits and dents, is there anything else I can do or is that it?

Once I repair this joystick is will work just look a bit ugly.

Replace the cable with a new cable. You can buy new cables with correct dpin from eBay.

As for case defect, I would avoid trying to fix that as usually this cannot be undone.

As I thought

All I can do is reduce the damage a bit.

The cable, I am assuming there is a break inside it somewhere. It is a bit twisted and is refusing to go back to its original shape. I gather it was left like this for a long time and then leached onto the joystick casing.
